"The
Jerez Festival has already become an important reference point with respect to
flamenco dance, the most important type of Spanish dance in the whole world".
Those are the terms used in the promotion of the first flamenco festival of the
year 2000. And to demonstrate that these words are true, the principal figures
of the Teatro Villamarta went to Seville to announce the names of the dance companies
that will participate in the 14 days of the festival, and the order in which they
will be performing, which is this: Joaquín Grilo, Antonio Canales, Antonio
Márquez, Carmen Cortés, Manuela Carrasco-María del Mar Moreno-Beatriz
Martín, Farruquito-ElMimbre-Juana Amaya-Angelita Vargas, Javier Barón,
Merche Esmeralda,Color Compañía de Danza, Manolete-Estrella Morente,
Antonio elPipa-Moraíto, Nuevo Ballet Español, Eva la Yerbabuena
and Angelita Gómez-Manolo Marín.
The
festival, which will be held in the dates between the World Motorcycling Championships
and the Feria of Jerez, will include six eclusive premières: the first
two of these (‘Jácara’, by Joaquín Grilo, who also presents his
new dance company, and ‘La Cenicienta’, with Antonio Canales, a show that had
been announced for the previous edition, but that was suspended due to the disputes
between Antonio and Sara Baras) and the two last have been especially prepared
for the Jerez Festival (‘Eva’, by La Yerbabuena, includes the participation of
JavierLatorre, and ‘De Sevilla a Jerez’, by Gómez-Marín, with Rafael
Campallo and Andrés Peña as special guests); also new are the show
to be presented by Manolete and the highly awaited new piece of the Compañía
de Javier Barón, called ‘Tracaná de laCaleta’.
In
addition to the dance program, the rest of the program will include two new sections,
dedicated to the cante and the guitar, which will be presented for the first time
in such beautiful settings (which will be kept in their original form) as are
the small mosque of the Alcazar or the Villavicencio Palace; in the first of these
two settings will perform, under the title ‘Inquietudes’, cantaores like Vicente
Soto, Miguel Poveda and Arcángel; Carlos Piñana and Paco Javier
Jimeno will be some of the guitar players included in the shows held in the second
setting, under the title of ‘Bordón y cuentanueva’. The series called ‘De
peña en peña’ will also continue as usual, and this time the‘Trasnoches’
will be moved to the bodegas and other places with such attractive programs as
‘En "ca" Fernando de la Morena’ or ‘Juncales de Jerez’.
The
program will also include a series of courses, conferences and other complementary
activities (International forum, Coreographical contest, exhibitions, presentation
of books and albums) which culminate a festival which has an overall budget of
85 million pesetas - four less than last year - "on the shoulders of the
Fundación Teatro Villamarta, that is to say, on those of the Jerez Ayuntamiento",
according to the director of the festival, Paco López. Individual tickets
for each show, as well as fetival tickets (for a minimum of eight shows) will
be on sale since the 29th of January 2000.
