Antonio Marquez. Teatro Villamarta.
The bullfighter
with a swans´ smile
The adaptation
of Bizet´s music gave a kitsch air to the Spanish dance of Antonio Marquez and
his company. It was the Goyesque touch of the festival.

After the full
house of the first two evenings at the Villamarta, the theatre was only half full
when Antonio Marquez appeared on stage, with the curtains still down, and he slowly
presented each of the members of his company with a slight movement of his shoulder,
in a disciplined and physically generous effort: without moving but straining
as he stood on one foot .
In the first part
of the show he danced "Reencuentros", a piece presented three years
ago and created by two choreographers well-known by the dancer from Seville-Ibiza-Madrid;
the choreography by Jose Granero held the symmetry with the original music recorded
by Emilio de Diego, whose guitar with additional effects left us with some moments
of percussion (plus the castanets), then a solo piano section, and a final part
without music, even in the salutation to the devoted fans who, like last year,
had Matilde Coral as the central figure of the stage. The repeated bullfighters´
salute was the premonition for the second part, "Después de Carmen",
performing an Escamillo of many poses.

Bizet and more
Bizet, adapted by Faustino Nuñez. The prerecorded music was intermingled
with the sound of the musicians hidden behind the curtains, and it followed the
movements of each dancer, of which stood out the close-cut velvet red of the bullfighter
played by Marquez with his white swan smile (a friend and photographer compared
the explosions of joy of the tavern with "La casa de la pradera": Laura
Ingels "por bulerias"). The "seguiriyas-bulerias" accompanied by a ´cello seemed
as square as the "burladero" (protection bar for the bullfighters), then we had
the bullfighter carried out on the shoulders of his men and a final dramatic death
among the usual themes portrayed (and where there was a table, on top of it they
went)…
An orchestra played
music for the twosome, before Marquez was surrounded from both sides by the women
dancers. Control, corporal color. Back to the bullfighting arena, dancing with
a shawl. More bullfighter. Full-blasted Carmen.
