The vitality of flamenco dancing is a fact which the 2011 Alburquerque Flamenco Festival wants the record to show. The twenty-fourth edition of this veteran U.S. event gathers on its bill bailaores of the latest generation such as José Maya, Fuensanta la Moneta and María José Franco. They are joined by the local company Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company with a new show. The children’s camp with educational activities about flamenco as well as baile, cante, guitar, clapping and box drum workshops complete the program. The festival is to be held from June 8th to 12th at two venues in the U.S. city: the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the University of New Mexico’s Rodey Theater.

New airs blow in flamenco dancing. And that’s reflected in the lineup which has been elaborated by the National Institute of Flamenco for the twenty-fourth edition of the 2011 Alburquerque Flamenco Festival. The opening of the show schedule will take place on June 8th at the Rodey Theater, with the performance of Madrilenian bailaor José Maya, who recently presented his show ‘Maya’ at Festival de Jerez 2011. The second night of young flamenco dancing at the theater of the University of New Mexico stars Fuensanta la Moneta, the Granada-born bailaora who has toured the flamenco circuit in the last season with shows such as ‘Bailar, vivir’ and ‘Extremo jondo’. Cádiz-born bailaora María José Franco moves the festival’s hub to the Journal Theater of the National Hispanic Cultural Center on June 10th, an act presented in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes. And then at night on the same stage, the icing on the cake of the festival will be provided by Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company, directed by Joaquín Encinias.

With the aim of offering a special experience to participants of every age group, the festival once again organizes the Flamenco Kids Camp, which is to be held for two weeks from May 31st to June 10th. For children from 6 to 12 years of age, it explores the different categories of flamenco art as well as Spanish language, culture and history. Moreover, at the same time as the live performances, the festival has organized over twenty workshops in different specialties of baile, guitar, percussion and clapping, most of which are taught by Spanish professionals on the bill. And all of it is joined by the eighth edition of the National Flamenco Contest for bailaores, cantaores and guitarists, whose final will be held on June 9th with three cash prizes for the winners. Registration is open until June 8th.
“Developing a vibrant flamenco community in Albuquerque has been a lifetime commitment for me personally”, says Eva Encinias Sandoval, Founder and Executive Director of the National Institute of Flamenco. Following twenty-four editions of the festival – which have included performances by figures such as Manuela Carrasco, Juana Amaya, Antonio Canales and Rocío Molina, among many others -, she affirms that “the only way to truly realize this endeavor, there must be a complete experience for our community that ranges from the grassroots element of classes and public performance to the highest end of artistry in the world”.
