For the last nineteen years, the
National Flamenco Institute, whose headquarters is located
in the U.S. city of Albuquerque, has celebrated a festival
in June which, through performances and courses, aims “to
preserve flamenco art, culture and history”. There
are two main attractions in this edition, which will take
place from June 10th to 18th, 2005. On the one hand, the
‘Flamenco Dynasties’ gala will bring the Farruco,
Amaya and Fernández families together in a show for
the first time ever. And on the other hand, the show by
bailaor Andrés
Marín, which carries the title ‘Asimetrías’
(‘Asymmetries’). Also scheduled is a performance
by the local company Yjastros, with the show ‘Flamenco
Road’. The bill is completed by a program of baile,
guitar, cante and percussion courses for enthusiasts of
all levels and ages, plus the educational camp for children
‘Flamenco Kids Camp’.
The company in charge of opening the festival
is Yjastros, The American Flamenco Repertory Company. It
is to perform the show ‘Flamenco Road: Nails in my
Shoes’ on Friday, June 10th, Saturday the 11th and
Sunday the 12th at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
The show narrates the city of Albuquerque's history through
the eyes of the company's director, bailaor Joaquín
Encinias.

The Andrés Marín Company
presents its new show ‘Asimetrías’,
which premiered at Seville's 2004 Bienal. The Sevillian
artist is accompanied by bailaoras Úrsula
López, Leonor Leal and Elena Algado in this work
he describes as “sensations I have concerning flamenco”,
combining tradition with the avant-garde. The event is on
Wednesday, June 15th at the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe and
on June 16th at the Rodey Theater on the University of New
Mexico Campus.
All eyes are now on the ‘Flamenco
Dynasties’ gala, which is going to join the Farruco,
Amaya and Fernández families for the very first time.
The performances are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15th
at the Rodey Theater and for Thursday the 16th at the Lensic
Theater. Farruco and his mother La Farruca, Mercedes Amaya
and Karime Amaya, are a few of the artists taking part in
this unique show. To close, the festival has a ‘Flamenco
Party’ scheduled for Friday, June 17th and Saturday
the 18th at the Rodey Theater, which gathers artists from
the U.S., Granada and Seville, with the special participation
of the Farruco family.

The festival's training section offers
over thirty specialized workshops such as those of guitar,
baile, cante, percussion, history, clapping and castanets.
The classes will be held at the University of New Mexico's
Carlisle Gym. Another of the related activities is the Flamenco
Expo, the fourth professional and semi-professional flamenco
competition. It is scheduled for Monday, June 13th at the
Rodey Theater, with a jury consisting of artists taking
part in the festival. A round-table on flamenco is to be
held the following day, with free admission for all enthusiasts.
There is also room for children in this event. Designed
for them is ‘Flamenco Kids Camp’, which with
an educational program including baile, cante and guitar,
takes place from Monday, June 6th to Friday the 17th at
