The 2007 Alburquerque Flamenco Festival takes different looks at flamenco dancing. ‘Notas al pie’ by Javier Barón, the latest show by Compañía Juana Amaya and ‘Noche flamenca’ by Soledad Barrio and Alejandro Granados are a few of the performances scheduled from June 8th to 16th, 2007 at the University of New Mexico’s Rodey Theater. The festival, organized by The National Institute of Flamenco, is the granddaddy of all those held in the United States.

Yjastros, The American Flamenco Repertory Company, inaugurates the twenty-first edition of the Alburquerque Flamenco Festival 2007 on Friday, June 8th at the Albuquerque Journal Theatre National Hispanic Cultural Center. The company performs new choreographies by Juana Amaya, Alejandro Granados, Yolanda Heredia, La Tati and Israel Galván. The next day at the University of Mexico’s Rodey Theater, Compañía Juana Amaya performs its latest show. The bailaora from Morón (Seville) is accompanied by Nazaret Reyes, Jairo Barrull, Augustín el Bola and Enrique el Extremeño, among other artists.

The festival continues on Sunday, June 10th with the gala ‘Flamenco Granada’, taken care of by Iván Vargas, Vero la India and José Fernández. Bailaora Soledad Barrio, bailaores Alfonso Losa and Alejandro Granados, Miguel Pérez, José Anillo and Manuel Gago gather on Monday the 11th in the show ‘Noche flamenca’. The following night, the Rodey Theater’s stage goes to Javier Barón, who performs his show ‘Notas al pie’ with bailaora Isabel Bayón as guest artist.

Grand finale and courses

The end of the festival is announced with ‘Fiesta Flamenca’, scheduled for Wednesday, June 13th at Santa Fe’s Lensic Theatre, with the participation of Juana Amaya, Javier Barón, Vero la India, Iván Vargas and Yjastros. This celebration is repeated on the 15th and 16th at the Albuquerque Journal Theater. The icing on the cake will be provided by the sixth edition of the Concurso Nacional de Flamenco (National Flamenco Contest) on Thursday, June 14th at the Rodey Theater. Parallel to the schedule of performances, a varied related program is held with flamenco courses by maestros such as Javier Barón, Isabel Bayón, Juana Amaya and Adela Campallo, among others.
