2010 Alburquerque Flamenco
Festival combines baile’s tradition and present
The festival, one of the most veteran ones, holds its show
and course schedule from June 9th to 13th in the city in
New Mexico (USA)
Flamenco-world.com, April 2010
Albuquerque once again vindicates
its Spanish roots. The city in the American state of New
Mexico is to hold a new edition of its flamenco festival,
now running for over two decades. From June 9th to 13th,
2010, two theaters split up the show schedule, organized
by the National Institute of Flamenco. Focusing especially
on baile, the bill combines the weight of tradition upheld
by Manuela Carrasco, with the fresh air contributed by young
bailaores such as Manuel Liñán, Andrés
Peña with Pilar Ogalla, and Concha Jareño
as the guest of guitarist Juan Antonio Suárez ‘Cano’.
The bill is completed with workshops, a
flamenco contest and a children’s camp.
Manuela
Carrasco will be the artist in charge of inaugurating
the 2010 Alburquerque Flamenco Festival. On Wednesday, June
9th at the Alburquerque Journal Theatre of the National
Hispanic Cultural Center, the Sevillian bailaora will present
her show ‘Suspiro flamenco’, in which she is
accompanied by bailaores El Torombo and Rafael de Carmen,
as well as guitarist Joaquín Amador. The first display
of new-generation baile will be provided by Manuel
Liñán on Thursday, June 10th at
the University of New Mexico’s Rodey Theatre. The
Granada-born bailaor is surrounded in this show by bailaores
such as La Tacha, Ana Romero and Jesús Fernández,
guitarists like Antón Jiménez, Arcadio Marín
and Luis Mariano, and cantaor David Maldonado. Taking place
after the performance will be the final of the 7th National
Flamenco Contest, attended by new bailaores, cantaores and
guitarists from all over the country.
The festival offers a twin bill on Friday, June 11th. At
the Rodey Theatre, bailaores Andrés
Peña and Pilar Ogalla will perform their show
‘A fuego lento’, premiered at Festival de Jerez
2007. The Jerez-born bailaor and the Cádiz-born bailaora
dance to the cante of Luis Moneo, Inmaculada Rivero and
Emilio Florido. And at the Journal Theatre, guitarist Juan
Antonio Suárez ‘Cano’ presents ‘Seis
cuerdas para dos tacones’ with the special collaboration
of bailaora Concha
Jareño. On Saturday, June 12th and Sunday the
13th, the festival closes with two installments of ‘Fiesta
flamenca’, a show in which the artists on the bill
during the week come together. In addition to the live shows,
there is a related course program of baile,
guitar, cante, clapping, box drum and castanets. Also to
be held is the seventh edition of the National Flamenco
Contest, which is attended by new American talents in the
genre. With a view to the children’s audience, Flamenco
Kids Camp offers a first approach to flamenco by means of
workshops.
