2008 Albuquerque Flamenco Festival. Show schedule

In its twenty-second edition, the Albuquerque Flamenco Festival focuses on the current flamenco dancing scene. The U.S. festival, which is to be held from June 6th to 15th, 2008 in Alburquerque (New Mexico), schedules the show ‘Los grandes’, in which Sevillian bailaor Antonio Canales sponsors young talents such as Amador Rojas. Coming to the festival with their own shows is Málaga-born bailaora Rocío Molina, who presents ‘Preludios varios’; and the tandem consisting of bailaores Manuel Liñán and Marcos Flores, with the show ‘Dos en compañía’. The more traditional perspective will be provided by Jerez-born Inmaculada Ortega and Córdoba-born Carmen la Talegona. All of them, who will also share a flamenco party, are to be joined by the local contribution of the repertoire company Yjastros, performing choreographies by bailaores like Juana Amaya, Alejandro Granados and Israel Galván.

The prologue to the 22nd Albuquerque Flamenco Festival will star Yjastros. The U.S. flamenco repertoire company, directed by Joaquín Encinias, will inaugurate the bill on June 6th at the Albuquerque Journal Theater of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, with a show open to the public which includes choreographies by bailaores such as Juana Amaya, Alejandro Granados, Yolanda Heredia, La Tati and Israel Galván.

The center of attention will shift the following day to the Rodey Theater at the University of New Mexico. There, on June 7th, the Antonio Canales Company will present ‘Los grandes’, a show in which the veteran bailaor from Seville champions young baile talents such as Amador Rojas. The music is by Jesús de Rosario, Iván Losada, David el Gallo, Antonio Rubio and Lucky Losada.

After the day devoted to the sixth edition of the National Flamenco Contest for cantaores, bailaores and guitarists, on June 10th the brilliant Málaga-born bailaora Rocío Molina will perform her show ‘Preludios varios’, a summary of bailes in which she is accompanied by guitarists Manuel Cazás and Paco Cruz, cantaores Emilio Florido and David Lagos, percussionist Sergio Martínez, and Cecilia Lizcano and Vanesa Coloma on compás. Starring the following night will be bailaores Marcos Flores and Manuel Liñán, with the show ‘Dos en compañía’. They are accompanied by Emilio Florido and David Lagos on cante, Antonia Jiménez and Arcadio Marín on toque, plus Cecilia Lizcano and Vanesa Coloma on compás. Also to present a project is bailaora Inmaculada Ortega, who will close the performances at the Rodey Theater on June 12th with the show ‘Maneras de sentir’. The dancers are accompanied by musicians such as Talegón de Córdoba, Emilio Florido, David Vázquez, Andrés Heredia, Antonio Españadero, Fernando Favier and Diego Villegas.

The festival will be closed with a flamenco party taken part in by Antonio Canales, Inmaculada Ortega, Manuel Liñán, Marcos Flores, Rocío Molina and Yjastros. And there will be three chances to enjoy it: on June 13th and 14th at the Albuquerque Journal Theater, and on the 15th at the Lensic Theatre in the neighboring city of Santa Fe. The program of the veteran festival is completed with workshops in different disciplines related to flamenco dancing and toque by some of the artists on the bill, including a master class by Antonio Canales; and the Flamenco Kids Camp, an educational encounter about flamenco for children.
