Arcángel
travels in time. The premiere of ‘Zambra 5.1’
at Festival Málaga en Flamenco 2007 situates him
in the past, where he goes in search of the figure of
the mythical cantaor Manolo
Caracol. But it also leads him to the present, making
a reference to his time upon presenting the first flamenco
show with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. The show is to be
presented on September 26th at the Teatro Las Lagunas
in the Málaga-area town of Mijas. The show is also
scheduled to be performed on November 25th at the Teatro
de la Maestranza in Seville.

Zambra 5.1’, the new show by Arcángel,
takes a chronological tour of the work of the brilliant
Sevillian cantaor beginning in 1922, the year he won an
award at the Cante Jondo Contest of Granada, until the
famous zambras he revolutionized cante flamenco with.
And to do so, the Huelva-born cantaor is accompanied live
by pianist Dorantes,
guitarists Miguel
Ángel Cortes and Daniel Méndez, percussionist
Chico Fargas and bailaora Pastora
Galván.
The show goes beyond that. Besides the
use of Dolby 5.1 surround sound for the first time in
a flamenco show, the production relies on audiovisuals
which will be mixed with the cantaor’s voice. In
shooting the footage, he also had the special collaboration
of matador Javier Conde donning a bullfighter’s
costume.
From Málaga to Seville
The premiere is scheduled for September
26th at the Teatro Las Lagunas in Mijas, within the ‘Siete
caracolas’ series of Festival Málaga en Flamenco
2007, which also includes Enrique
Morente with ‘De Juan Breva a Pablo Picasso’
and La Cuadra with ‘Flamenco para La Traviata’.
Afterwards, the show will be performed in grand fashion
in Seville. The date is on November 25th at the Teatro
de la Maestranza in Seville. Arcángel is scheduled
to alternate the new show with the tour of his latest
album, ‘Ropavieja’, throughout the season.
