Following its premiere at Córdoba's
Great Theater in March, Andalusia Flamenco Ballet is to
perform the show ‘Viaje al Sur’ (‘Journey
to the South’) in Madrid. The official Andalusian
company will make a stop at the Movistar Theater from August
10th to 27th, 2005. Cristina
Hoyos, current director of what was formerly called
the Andalusian Dance Company, defines it as “a show
without a storyline which, in its three pictures, mirrors
the three most important feelings in life and flamenco:
joy, tragedy and passion”. The Sevillian bailaora,
the show's star and choreographer, stages seven pairs of
bailaores, among them, one including herself together with
bailaor El Junco.
‘Viaje al Sur’ enjoys the stage
direction of choreographer Ramón Oller, winner of
the 1994 National Dance Prize. The group of musicians live
consists of cantaores Reyes Martín, Vicente Gelo
and Antonio Núñez 'El Pulga'; guitarist Ramón
Amador and percussionist Roberto Jaén. The music
has been composed especially for this show by guitarist
José Luis Rodríguez.
Since Cristina Hoyos took over direction
of the Andalusia Flamenco Ballet in 2004, the official Andalusian
company has staged two shows. ‘Yerma’, based
on the work of the same name by Lorca, has just been presented
at the official ceremony of the 2005 Almería Mediterranean
Games, as the climax of a prolonged worldwide tour. The
new show ‘Viaje al Sur’ will in all likelihood
be in the Málaga Flamenco Festival this September,
after going to Poland and Mexico.
