Berklee exports its musical campuses to Europe for the first time. The destination will be the Palau de las Arts in Valencia (Spain), where the Flamenco Summer Program 2011 is going to be held from July 26th to 28th. The course’s music director will be producer and composer Javier Limón, who already works as a teacher at the University of Boston’s main campus. The faculty consists of percussionist Israel Suárez 'Piraña' - a regular musician for Diego el Cigala and Paco de Lucía -, cantaora Sandra Carrasco, guitarist Antonio Sánchez and bailaora Belén López. The global aim of the course is “for the student to receive the esthetic and artistic tools of flamenco in order to be able to use them in his or her own music”. The stylistic variants of flamenco will be the core of the syllabus, which will delve into Bulerías, Fandango de Huelva, Soleá and Alegrías. These styles will be tackled from flamenco’s basic disciplines (guitar, cante, baile and percussion) individually and collectively, both from the viewpoint of a soloist and accompanist, and with special emphasis on unraveling “the secrets of flamenco technique and interpretation”. The classical and current fusions will coexist in this three-day experience which, with a flexible pedagogical nature, will adapt to the students’ needs. The classes will be taught in Spanish with translation into English.
