Filmmaker and photographer Carlos
Saura has been assigned to create the official image
of the upcoming edition of Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco,
which will take place from September 13th to October 15th,
2006. The Aragonese director follows the footsteps of recognized
plastic arts authors – such as Antoni Tápies,
Rafael Alberti and Luis Gordillo – who have been chosen
in previous festivals to make the bill.
The author of such renowned films as ‘Bodas
de Sangre’ (1981) and ‘El Amor Brujo’
(1986) has prepared a poster based on a photograph which
plays with the esthetic silhouette of bailaora Belén
Maya and with shapes and colors through a treatment
of digitalization and superposition through those panels
that have brought so much success to the filmmaker born
in Huesca.
The origin of the bill lies in a black-and-white
photo which Carlos Saura took during the shooting of the
film ‘Flamenco’
(1995). In the original photo, according to its own author,
“Belén Maya’s silhouette is seen in a
rehearsal for the movie, in a take against the light in
front of great rectangular panels lined with semi-transparent
plastic and lit from behind. Their use allows me to transform
stages into new, clean, stylized places, in which artists’
images and their movements are practically the essential
reason and unique center of attention. On digitizing the
footage, I was able to manipulate it freely on my computer
in order to achieve a different effect and if possible,
a new creation”.
This work has been inserted in the photo
exhibit ‘Flamenco’ – by the Aragonese
artist – which is currently touring the U.S. cities
of Chicago and New York. Domingo González, director
of the Bienal, has assured that “this exhibit –
which summarizes fifty years of Saura’s dedication
to this artform – will be present in the Bienal’s
upcoming edition”.
Program preview
Although there is not a definitive preview
yet of the program of the 14th Bienal de Flamenco Sevilla
2006, this medium has managed to find out that bailaor Israel
Galván, winner of the 2005 National Dance Prize
for Creation, will be present in the upcoming edition with
the shows ‘Arena’ – premiered at the 2004
Bienal – and ‘Tabula rasa’ – premiered
a month ago at Sala Joaquín Turina of Seville’s
El Monte Foundation. At the same time, the Sevillian artist
will premiere as a choreographer in the show ‘La francesa’,
whose star is young bailaora Pastora Galván.
