If there’s a variable in flamenco which captures the spectator’s attention straight away, it’s baile. And Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008 is defined as a suitable forum not just to reaffirm recognized artists, but also to discover the most creative shows. In this fifteenth edition of the Sevillian festival, the riskier options in the lineup are ‘El cielo de tu boca’ by Andrés Marín, ‘Ti me ta ble’ by Marco Vargas and Chloé Brûlé, ‘Tejidos al tiempo’ by Choni Compañía Flamenca and ‘En sus 13’ by Manuel Liñán, Olga Pericet and Marcos Flores. It’s all topped off with ‘El final de este estado de cosas redux’ by Israel Galván, who manages to take the avant-garde to the venue of the classics, the Teatro de la Maestranza.

September 11th. Teatro Alameda (11 p.m.)
‘Tejidos al tiempo’, Choni Compañía Flamenca

Asunción Pérez ‘La Choni’ puts her work on hold as a member of the Eva Yerbabuena Company’s dance corps to present her first solo project. ‘Tejidos al tiempo’ reflects the struggle between life and death with groundbreaking stage design esthetics. The Sevillian bailaora has bailaor Alejandro Granados and contemporary dancer Manuel Cañadas as guest artists.

September 12th. Teatro Central (9 p.m.)
‘Ti me ta ble (o El tiempo inevitable)’, Marco Vargas & Chloé Brûlé

Marco Vargas y Chloé Brûlé paired up as artists, daring to take flamenco dancing to streets and squares. That first show, ‘Las 24’, was later moved to the theater, a place for which ‘Ti me ta ble’ (o El tiempo inevitable)’ is conceived. The show is a reflection about the power of time in life’s evolution performed by the triangle consisting of the two bailaores and cantaor Juan José Amador.
September 20th. Teatro Central (9 p.m.)
‘En sus 13’, Manuel Liñán, Olga Pericet & Marcos Flores

Each project by Manuel Liñán, Olga Pericet and Marcos Flores is proof that art in collaboration is necessary. The three bailaores continue in their determination to create a common style, as they did earlier in ‘Chanta la mui’. But in ‘En sus 13’, a brand-new premiere, they also vindicate their respective individualities as choreographers.

September 22nd and 23rd. Teatro Central (9 p.m.)
‘El cielo de tu boca’, Compañía Andrés Marín

Andrés Marín’s show is one of the ones the organization has decided to extend due to demand. And it appears as the most conceptual one in the entire festival. The Sevillian bailaor and choreographer seeks to delve into the meanings and sounds of bells, something he already tried out in the previous ‘El alba del último día’. He is backed by experimental musician Llorenç Barber, a specialist in the instrument, and by cantaores of the magnitude of Segundo Falcón, José Valencia and Enrique Soto.

September 24th. Teatro Maestranza (8:30 p.m.)
‘El final de este estado de cosas redux’, Compañía Israel Galván

Israel Galván, who the previous Bienal paid tribute to by scheduling a trilogy for him after winning the National Dance Prize, presents a new version of ‘El final de este estado de cosas’. The show, based on the biblical Apocalypse, was premiered in Málaga en Flamenco 2007. Japanese butoh dancing, the low sound of a rociero drum and the sounds inside of a coffin are some of the experiments in the show, whose artistic directing is handled by Pedro G. Romero.
