Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco 2010 is now revving up its engines. The program with which it celebrates its thirtieth anniversary has been revealed and tickets are now on sale. In its sixteenth edition, the flamenco macrofestival offers a total of 65 performances of 55 shows split up between seven stages. All of them are included in the slogan “Flamenco de viva voz” (“Flamenco in Person”) and are moreover inserted into six different cycles by theme, among them, ‘Clásicos del siglo XXI’, ‘Flamenco y otras aves’ and ‘El flamenco que viene’. The bill is highlighted by the star of its inauguration, who will be cantaor Miguel Poveda with a concert at the Plaza de San Francisco, and that of the close, by maestro Paco de Lucía. But in the twenty-five days running from September 15th to October 9th, there will be many names and shows in the foreground.

The ‘Clásicos del siglo XXI’ Series “is made up of shows proposed by that generation of artists who, halfway between two centuries, have created a style of their own, a new esthetic discourse”. And that concept includes premieres such as ‘Tranquilo alboroto’ by Rubén Olmo, ‘Sonerías’ by Farruquito, ‘Sin muros!’ by Dorantes, ‘El alma encendida’ by Juan Carlos Romero, ‘En la horma de sus zapatos’ by Isabel Bayón, ‘Vaivenes’ by Javier Barón, a show by Eva Yerbabuena which is still untitled, ‘150 gramos de pensamientos’ by Rafaela Carrasco, ‘Raíces del alma’ by Esperanza Fernández, ‘Al compás de Soler’ by Rafael Campallo and ‘Bailar. Vivir’ by Fuensanta la Moneta, among others. The latest works by Rocío Molina, Andrés Marín and Pastora Galván are also a part of this series.

El Lebrijano, with a revival of ‘Casablanca’, kicks off the ‘Lo jondo del futuro’ Series, consisting of “great maestros who show us that flamenco which we’re obliged to preserve”. Agujetas and José Menese share ‘Así cantaban y así cantan’, Fernando de la Morena, El Torta and Luis el Zambo co-star in ‘Jerez. La uva y el cante’, Juana la del Pipa, Dolores Agujetas and La Macanita are ‘Mujerez’, José Antonio resorts to the ‘Divine Comedy’ in ‘Paseo por el amor y la muerte’, Pansequito does the live version of ‘Un canto a la libertad’ and Manuel de Paula invites El Funi in ‘An’ca Paula’.

With the ‘El flamenco que viene’ Series at the Teatro Alameda and the Teatro Central, the Bienal lays stakes on “artists who are starting to stand out as soloists”. New names in cante will be a part of this series, among them, David Lagos with ‘El espejo en que me miro’, Antonio Campos with ‘Corral del Carbón’, David Palomar with ‘La Viña, cantón independiente’, Rocío Segura with ‘Aires de Levante’, Argentina with ‘Las minas de Egipto’ and La Tremendita with ‘A tiempo’. On toque, David Carmona, Paco Escobar and Santiago Lara will “premiere”. And in the section of latest-generation baile, there’s José Maya and Alfonso Losa with ‘Grito’, ‘De sandalia a tacón’ by Ana Morales and Borja Évora, and Concha Jareño with ‘Algo’.

Mixed and tangential types of music provide contents for the ‘Flamencos y otras aves’ Series, a really varied program which has room for Peret, Los Chichos and Kiko Veneno; Raimundo Amador, Remedios Amaya and La Mala; Valderrama with ‘Maestros’, La Choni and Manuel Lombo with ‘La gloria de mi mare’; the 40th Anniversary of the Yoko Komatsubara Ballet with ‘Hibiki. Este-Oeste’; and ‘Dunas’ by María Pagés and contemporary dancer Sido Larbi Cherkaoui.

The Hotel Triana, a 19th-century courtyard, is the setting for the ‘Al son de las estrellas’ Series. There will be a night dedicated to Cádiz-style flamenco with Rancapino, Juan Villar and Mariana Cornejo; another for that of Extremadura; and another for that of Lebrija, with Inés Bacán and Concha Vargas, among others. And moreover, the show ‘Ensayo y tablao’ will be presented by Lalo Tejada and Juan José Amador, with Manolo Marín as special collaborator.

In charge of bringing flamenco to children in this edition is the Laura Vital Company with ‘Flamenco School Musical’ and José Luis Montón, Teresa Jaldón and Ana Salazar with the live version of ‘Flamenco Kids’.
