Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco 2012
presents a program marked by “dialogues”

The festival is to be held from September 3rd to 30th on several stages in Seville (Spain)

Sara Baras, Manuela Carrasco, Israel Galván, María Pagés, Ballet Nacional de España and Andrés Marín, among many other artists, star in a lineup of 70 shows

Silvia Calado, May 23rd, 2012

Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco 2012 will dialogue. The seventeenth edition of the macrofestival in Seville relates the different trends in flamenco, from tradition to the avant-garde, as well as flamenco with other genres of music, dance and plastic arts. The Bienal, which offers 70 baile, cante, toque and music shows, will be held from September 3rd to 30th at the Teatro Maestranza, the Teatro Lope de Vega, the Teatro Central, the Alcázar, the Teatro Central and, as a novelty, the Espacio Santa Clara, Fibes Auditorium and the Andalusian Contemporary Art Center. Sara Baras, Manuela Carrasco, María Pagés, Israel Galván, Andrés Marín, Marina Heredia, Estévez & Paños, Ballet Nacional de España and Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, among many other companies, star on the bill. According to Rosalía Gómez, artistic director of the great jondo event, “the Bienal is conceived as a city project: Seville has to breathe flamenco”. All information about the program, shows and ticket sales is now on the festival website www.labienal.com

Guitar and cante also have a place reserved for them, with shows like ‘Made in Jerez’ by Gerardo Núñez, ‘Ensayo Flamenco 2012’ by Carmen Linares, ‘12 cuerdas’ by Alfredo Lagos and Dani de Morón as well as ‘Colores del fuego’ by Antonio Rey, plus recitals by cantaores such as Rafael de Utrera and Pedro el Granaíno, among others. The bill also revives shows already seen in previous editions like ‘¡Viva Jerez!’ - now with La Macanita and Jesús Méndez as guest artists - and ‘Pastora’ by Pastora Galván. The live flamenco is complemented by an offer of flamenco dancing courses with over one thousand places.

There won’t be an inaugural show at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco 2012, but rather an entire week of inauguration. And once again, it will be at the historical enclave of the Real Alcázar where, according to festival director Rosalía Gómez, “three magical nights” will be lived. As it is a Bienal dedicated to baile, the first to perform on September 3rd will be Manuela Carrasco, dialoguing with the cante of Pansequito, El Pele, Juan Villar and El Extremeño. And the other two will be interdisciplinary encounters: 'Las idas y las vueltas', which unites Fahmi Alqhai’s baroque music and Arcángel’s cante; and 'Las huellas' by Los Farrucos and the Indian kathak company of Anuj Arjun Mishra. Meanwhile, the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía will open the doors of the Teatro de la Maestranza, where in the four weeks of the festival there will be performances of 'Utopía' by María Pagés, 'La Pepa' by Sara Baras, the presentation of Marina Heredia’s new album, 'Oasis abierto' by Carmen Linares, 'La Consagración' by Estévez & Paños with Antonio Canales as guest artist, 'La Celestina' by Shoji Kojima and the closing gala 'La punta y la raíz. Un paseo por el baile de Sevilla' which, in tribute to the maestros, will be directed by Rafaela Carrasco on September 30th. The shows will be on an even larger scale at the new Fibes Auditorium which, with over three thousand seats, is to be inaugurated with 'Medea' by the Ballet Nacional de España and 'Camarón 20 años' directed by Javier Limón.

The support of youths who are making an effort to make room for themselves and form their companies” which the director highlighted during the presentation of the program at Seville City Hall translates into shows such as 'De flamencas' by Marcos Flores, 'Rosa, metal, ceniza' by Olga Pericet, 'La otra piel' by Úrsula López, 'Perspectivas' by Mercedes Ruiz, '>>Rew' by Manuel Liñán and Daniel Doña, 'Paso a paso' by La Moneta, the dialogue between flamenco dancing and tap dance 'Flamenco Hoofer's' by Juan de Juan and Jason Samuel Smith, among others. The more modern shows, “without forgetting that they’re linked to the old-time stuff with a string which can’t be broken”, will be situated, besides at the Teatro Central, at the Andalusian Contemporary Art Center, located at the Monasterio de la Cartuja. Israel Galván will be there with 'Solo', as well as Niño de Elche with 'VaconBacon. Cantar las fuerzas' and Ana Morales with 'Reciclarte'. The stage of the Teatro Alameda will host the newcomers, the winners of the 3rd Andalusian Young Flamencos Contest, the children’s shows and proposals of “integrated flamenco” like 'Sorda. Flamenco puro en lengua de signos' by La Niña de los Cupones.

Tradition and avant-garde

The Teatro Lope de Vega will host the duality between tradition and the avant-garde, with the coexistence in its program of 'Tuétano' by Andrés Marín, 'La mar de flamenco' by Joaquín Grilo, José de la Tomasa, Julián Estrada and Adela Campallo, 'Entre el labio y el beso' by Segundo Falcón and Paco Jarana, 'Sortilegio de sangre' by Fernando Romero, 'Travesía' by Gerardo Núñez, 'Así soy yo' by Aurora Vargas and 'Una mirada hacia dentro' by Pepa Montes and Ricardo Miño, among others. And even though the Bienal’s aim is “to open doors to flamenco at theaters”, it will also take advantage of the many unique venues offered by Seville’s monumental heritage. In particular, one of the program’s hubs will be the Espacio Santa Clara, the former convent of the Order of St. Clare recently renovated and the festival’s headquarters, where dozens of acoustic concerts will be held both in the cloister and in the dormitory. Cantaores like Rafael de Utrera, Jesús Méndez, Pedro el Granaíno, Tomás de Perrate and Rocío Márquez, guitarists such as the Iglesias brothers, duos like the intergenerational one of La Sallago and María Mezcle, and that of cantaora La Tobala and Pedro Sierra, as well as flamenco and world music dialogues such as 'Qasida' by La Tremendita and Mohammad Motamedi, among others, will be heard at the historical building. The now traditional nights at the Hotel Triana will also be special, a space specializing in flamenco territories: Seville, Jerez and Málaga. All of it will be joined by a program of related activities, as yet to be defined, which will include exhibits and street shows that “will turn the entire city of Seville into a stage”.
