The Ballet Nacional de España (Spanish National Ballet) begins a new phase. Antonio Najarro premieres as its director and in his first appearance before the media, he has revealed his projects and aims. Proximity to the public, giving a fresh vision and “polishing the Spanish dance coming out of the BNE” are his goals. He is going to capture them in two types of annual seasons: one of new creation and another reviving the repertoire. The former begins with ‘Ángeles caídos’, a show directed by Hansel Cereza in which avant-garde esthetics will coexist with flamenco dancing, which will continue to have a “very important role”. In fact, the show - which premieres in March 2012 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid - has the participation of top names in today’s flamenco.

Javier Latorre, Rocío Molina, Olga Pericet, Rafaela Carrasco, Rubén Olmo and Manuel Liñán are, “due to their personality”, the choreographers of ‘Ángeles caídos’, a show which deals with “the struggle between the heavenly and the earthly”. The second part of this program will be an adaptation of ‘Suite Sevilla’, Najarro’s latest show with his own company. As the dancer explains, it’s a show with “classical Spanish dance”, whose music and title stem from a score by flamenco guitarist Rafael Riqueni.
The BNE, on tour
With a view to autumn 2012, the BNE will get a show ready to recover the repertoire which will include “the bolero school four-way dance by Antonio Ruiz Soler, two jotas by Pedro Azorín and ‘Medea’ by maestro Granero”. But the most immediate thing is the Asian tour that the BNE is starting this very week. From September 23rd to October 16th, 2011, it presents the shows ‘Dualia’, ‘La leyenda’, ‘Danza y Tronío’, ‘Caprichos’ and ‘Cambalache’ in the cities of Guangzhou in China, Taipei in Taiwan, Seoul in Korea, Singapore and Bangkok in Thailand. On November 29th and 30th in Russia, it will display them at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. And it will close the tour at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on December 9th, performing ‘Dualia’ and ‘La leyenda’ with an orchestra. Some performances are scheduled for 2012 in Spanish cities like Leganés (Madrid), Valladolid and Cádiz, as well as the premiere of ‘Ángeles caídos’ at the Teatro de la Zarzuela from March 22nd to April 1st.
