The ‘Guitarra flamenca paso a paso’ collection offers the study of bulerías on two new DVDs

José Manuel Montoya teaches this course of bulerías and their accompaniment

Flamenco-world.com, December 2005

The didactic collection on DVD ‘Guitarra flamenca paso a paso’ (‘Flamenco Guitar Step by Step’) focuses on the study of bulerías. Instructor José Manuel Montoya teaches this specialized ‘course’ in two new installments: ‘Guitarra flamenca. Bulerías paso a paso’ (‘Flamenco Guitar. Bulerías Step by Step’) and ‘Guitarra flamenca. Acompañamiento al cante por bulerías’ (‘Flamenco Guitar. Accompaniment on Cante through Bulerías’). These two volumes complete the series, following the previous installments on technique, alegrías and soleá by Óscar Herrero.

‘Guitarra flamenca. Bulerías paso a paso’

‘Guitarra flamenca. Bulerías paso a paso’ starts off with the bulerías ‘Yaíza’, which José Manuel Montoya performs with a group consisting of cantaor Curro Cueto, bass player Tomás Güero, percussionist Francisco Manuel Prieto on box drum and Carlos Chamorro on baile. Next, the teacher carries out a detailed study of its seven flourishes and the finish, displaying a broad range of strumming.

Each flourish is performed at two speeds. Firstly, with slow tempo accompanied by a metronome (knuckle-tapping and clapping) and with the possibility of choosing the audio (group, guitar only or knuckles and clapping only). And secondly, with bulería tempo accompanied by clapping, box drum and bass, and with the possibility of choosing the audio (group, guitar only, stressing bass, without guitar or without bass). Moreover, there is the option of several video tracks (the entire group, guitar only or bass only) for guitarists and bass players to practice.

This DVD, with a running time of 55 minutes, is presented in five languages: Spanish, English, French, German and Japanese. And it is available in the PAL and NTSC systems; that is, it is valid for all regions. It includes a 65-page libretto in standard notation and tablature in A4 format.

‘Guitarra flamenca. Acompañamiento al cante por bulerías’

The DVD for the study of accompaniment ‘Acompañamiento al cante por bulerías’ by maestro José Manuel Montoya offers a repertoire performed live with an accompaniment group throughout one hour. The guitarist performs bulerías de Jerez, bulerías de Cádiz, bulerías de Utrera and Lebrija, jaleos extremeños and romances. And he does so together with cantaor Curro Cueto, bass player Tomás Güero, Francisco Manuel Prieto on box drum and clapping by Carlos Chamorro, José Merino and David García. All of these styles are presented with a version with the guitar at a very low volume so that the student may practice with the group. Moreover, there is the option of several video tracks: group, guitar only or percussion only. Just like in ‘Guitarra flamenca. Bulerías paso a paso’, all the explanations are translated into Spanish, English, French, German and Japanese. The DVD is available for all regions - in PAL and NTSC - and includes a 65-page libretto in A4 format with the chords and times.
