Flamenco returns to the Price
Circus through the 2010 Caja Madrid Flamenco Festival
Cigala, Morente, Carmen Linares, Arcángel and Los
Pelaos perform in the event’s eighteenth edition,
which is to be held February 15th to 20th

There are sepia photos which bear
witness to it. At the beginning of the past century, cantaores
such as La Niña de los Peines used to perform at
the arena of the Price Circus, the old one, the one which
used to be at Plaza del Rey in Madrid. Two years ago, a
new stable circus opened its doors in the capital, at Ronda
de Atocha, and took its name from the old one. And also
the criteria of offering cante, toque and flamenco dancing,
as it is going to do now through the 2010 Caja Madrid Flamenco
Festival. The eighteenth edition of the event is to take
place at the ring from February 15th to 20th, with a bill
of heavyweights highlighted by cantaores Diego
el Cigala, Enrique Morente, Vicente Soto, Carmen Linares,
Mayte Martín and Arcángel. On baile will be
Los Pelaos, a centennial family of Madrilenian flamencos
whose city finally pays tribute to it. On toque will be
Enrique de Melchor, who is to receive the Calle de Alcalá
Award. And on piano, Dorantes.
Cante and poetry will open the bill. That
is the dialogue proposed by cantaora Carmen
Linares and cantaor Vicente Soto ‘Sordera’
on the first night, that of Monday, February 15th. Linares,
accompanied on guitar by Salvador Gutiérrez and Eduardo
Pacheco, will turn verses by Lorca and Juan Ramón
Jiménez into different flamenco styles. The Jerez-born
cantaor will opt for Alberti and Machado, backed on toque
by Pepe del Morao and Manuel Valencia. Both will coincide
in the poems by José Manuel Caballero Bonald, who
will receive the honorary Calle de Alcalá Award that
night.
This year’s prize, the 2010 Calle
de Alcalá, will be awarded to guitarist Enrique
de Melchor on the night of February 16th. On said occasion,
he will offer a special recital accompanied by a group highlighted
by bailaor Alfonso Losa as guest artist. The second part
will be taken care of by cantaora Mayte Martín, with
a traditional cante recital.
Madrid will finally recognize Los Pelaos,
the oldest family of flamenco dancers, the only hundred-year-old
one and one of the few coming from the capital city. Toni
el Pelao and La
Uchi will offer their most select bailes, among them
the pair’s caña and “Los Pelaos’
primitive” farruca. And they will be accompanied by
artists from the family like cantaora Charo Manzano and
guitarist Luis Miguel Manzano, as well as numerous colleagues
who will accompany them in the grand finale. The other half
of the evening will star another Madrilenian flamenco, cantaor
Diego el Cigala. He will combine cantes and boleros together
with musicians such as pianist Jumitus, contrabass player
Yelsi Heredia, percussionist Ramón Porrina and guitarist
Diego del Morao.
Following a break on Thursday, when the
stage will be occupied by Pat Metheny, the flamenco festival
resumes on Friday, February 19th with a twin bill which
combines the cante recital by Arcángel, accompanied
on toque by Miguel Ángel Cortés, and the recital
‘Piano abierto’ by Dorantes, who will have bailaor
Joaquín Grilo as guest artist. And it will culminate
on Saturday night with a whole recital by Enrique
Morente.
The complementary activities at La Casa
Encendida will be held this year the week after the festival.
From February 23rd to 26th, there will be illustrated lectures
at the auditorium of the cultural center with free admission.
Standing out, among others, is the round-table ‘Gerundino
Fernández, guitarrero de leyenda’ with Manolo
Franco on toque; and a circle about El Gallina’s centennial,
illustrated by Gabriel Moreno. The program ends on Friday,
February 26th with a triple recital by young talents like
cantaor El Piculabe and bailaora Selene Muñoz.
