Flamenco moves up a notch in its
curriculum of contacts with other types of world music. After jazz, the Cuban
'son' and the Indopakistani influences, the time has come for French chanson with
a show in which more than a score of artists will participate, with dancer Antonio
Canales heading the bill. After debuting in the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid
on January 16th, 2002, 'Chanson Flamenca' is to launch a tour throughout Spain,
France and Portugal.
Bohemia and duende shake hands in 'Chanson
Flamenca'. The show strives for a sui generis encounter of two musical traditions,
based on the recorded tribute of the same name which was released last year by
El Europeo. As producers José Luis Rupérez and Norbert Kalfon explain,
"the wardrobe, designed by Toni Mirón, the staging, the lighting...it's
all from the 'dowry' we have managed to bring together for this mixed wedding.
As with so many other great loves, this one has taken a while to be consummated,
but probably because of that, it is also a love which will result in an unforgettable
show."
Dancer Antonio Canales now gives choreographic
form to the music in a production with the participation of 22 artists. Under
the direction of musical producer Pedro Ojesto, singers such as Ramón el
Portugués, Guadiana, Yeye de Cádiz and Eva Durán, backed
up on the guitar by Edu Cortés and by musical co-producer Manuel de María
all take part. The musical section is rounded out by the percussion of Anton and
Sabu Salazar, and the Cuban string quartette Diapason.
The Madrid premiere will include guest
artists Enrique Heredia El Negri, a member of the Barbería del Sur who
interprets the theme 'La Bohême' on the record, and Portuquese artist Janita
Salomé. Special artistic collaborations will continue to be a characteristic
of the show throughout the tour of Spain, France and Portugal.
