‘Maldades’. This is the title under which the 2007 Ciutat Vella Festival Flamenco unveils its program. The fourteenth edition of the event takes a chance, with “small acts of daring in the face of resistance to change”. And to this end, it features the artistic talents of Carles Benavent Quartet, Pepe Habichuela & Josemi Carmona, Israel Galván and Son de la Frontera, among others. The event runs from 22nd to 26th May 2007 at Barcelona's Centro de Cultura Contemporánea.

The 2007 Festival Flamenco Ciutat Vella arrives at its fourteenth edition “firmly established now, and with both the event itself and the artistic choices in full maturity”. Barcelona's Center for Contemporary Culture once again opens up the 'Pati de Les Dones' to the flamenco arts. From 22nd to 26th May, this singular location will be a showcase for a very mixed bag, as the festival “seeks to remind people of the need to break down artistic barriers in the quest for a style of ones own”.

Following the opening ceremony on Tuesday 22nd May, with two chill out sessions to boot, at the hands of Garrotán and La Troba Kung Fú, the line-up of concerts kicks off the following day with the Carles Benavent Quartet. The Catalan flamenco jazz bassist is accompanied by Chicuelo as guest artist, guitarist Aleix Pujol, Ravid Goldschmidt on hang and Roger Blàvia on drums. They'll be rubbing shoulders with the bailaor José Maya, whose formation features Antonio Carmona and Simón Román on vocals, Jesús del Rosario on guitar and Lucky Losada on percussion. Mónica Navarro and 5xRumba take care of the chill out section today.

Pepe Habichuela and Josemi Carmona, father and son, bring together their respective visions of the guitar at the concert on Thursday 24th May. They boast a special guest - bassist Javier Colina - as well as their usual line-up, including Carlos Carmona on guitar, and Bandolero and Juan Carmona on percussion. The baile is left in the capable hands of El Junco, first bailaor with the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía company. The bailaor from Cadiz will be accompanied by David Palomar and David Sánchez on vocals, and Ramón Amador and Michele Giacarinno on guitar. The main performances are introduced and rounded off by Alba Guerrero and Jaleo Real.

The third day's line-up includes the group Ultra High Flamenco ‘UHF’, featuring José Quevedo on guitar, Cepillo and Paquito González on percussion, Pablo Martín on double bass and Alexis Lefèvre on violin. The other half of the bill comes from Son de la Frontera, playing songs from their second album ‘Cal’. Featuring Moi from Morón de la Frontera on vocals and compás, Raúl Rodríguez on Cuban tres guitar and flamenco guitar, Paco de Amparo on flamenco guitar, and with Manuel Flores providing extra rhythm and Pepe Torres as bailaor, the group takes a fresh approach to the legacy of Diego del Gastor. The chill out program is split between Las Migas and Carles Mestre & La Sinfónica de Gavà.

Bailaor Israel Galván will be top of the bill on the closing night, Saturday 26th May. The avant-garde artist from Seville presents ‘La edad de oro’, where he evokes the golden era alongside vocalist Fernando Terremoto and guitarist Alfredo Lagos. There will also be a performance from the eclectic group Calima, with songs from their latest project ‘Azul’. The last installments of the chill out program are those of Sara Flores and DJ Mingus G. Formentor.

To complete the festival program there are a series of parallel activities. Band Aèria are scheduled to perform ‘La fanfara malèfica’ every day in the private patio; there’s flamenco storytellers ‘La fuente de Carmen Amaya’ on 26th at midday; and the presentation of the book ‘Luces y sombras del flamenco’ on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are on sale at Telentrada.com.
