Flamenco-world.com, August 2007

Well-wishers from the U.S.A., Mexico, Venezuela, Holland, France and even Iran have been sending their congratulations to Flamenco-world.com. It's the Spanish website's 10th birthday as the Internet flamenco leader. Fans from around the globe highlighted above all the task of spreading the word: “Up until ten years ago, it was impossible to receive any information on flamenco outside of Spain... Now you bring it to us in our homes wherever we are”, explains one American reader. There are 85,000 people like her in every corner of the globe who subscribe to the website's ‘Cyberpeña’, and every month the site receives 4 million hits from 600,000 visitors.

Delaram is an Iranian flamenco-lover who confesses he doesn't know “how he'd learn about flamenco without the help of Flamenco-world.com”. These are the words of praise from one of the 85,000 passionate fans the Spanish website has spent a decade bringing the artform to. With daily information in Spanish and English, the page is the leader in its category, and one of the most-visited European cultural websites, with a total of 4 million pages viewed and 600,000 visitors recorded over the last month.

The website's community – the ‘Cyberpeña’ - consists of dance students and teachers, descendents of Spanish emigrants, journalists, event organizers, fans of artists such as Paco de Lucía, Joaquín Cortés or Camarón, World music lovers, or just plain flamenco-heads. There are those looking for information like Onya from the U.S., who assures us that “Flamenco-world is the best for information, news, video clips and music. Wow. There are no words to express how happy it makes me to see it all on the website.” There are descendents of Spanish emigrants such as 78-year-old Chilean Manuel Ramírez, who says that “you fill my life with happiness with your page. Maybe it's my Andalusian ancestry that makes me shudder with emotion from flamenco. Thanks for the happiness you bring me.” And there are professionals such as the Mexican teacher Zandra, who tells us that “my school is 40 years old now, and ever since you appeared in my life, it's been a thousand times better”.

From Alaska

Over the past ten years, Flamenco-world.com has managed to reach every corner of the globe, including places as remote as Alaska, Antarctica or the Virgin Isles. As Daniel Muñoz and Lydia Nieto - founder members of the project - explain, “in the beginning, we marked every point we sent albums, shoes or guitars to on a map, but we had to give up because not long afterwards the pins didn't fit.” The site's key market is currently the U.S.A., followed by Europe, Latin America and Asian countries such as Japan and Taiwan. In addition, Muñoz and Nieto add, “the website has reflected socio-economic changes in recent years, such as the Eastward expansion of the European Union and the opening up of the Chinese market.”
