Flamenco dance takes center stage in 'Jueves Flamenco', a series programmed each season by Seville's Fundación Cultural El Monte at the Sala Joaquín Turina. Antonio Canales, Matilde Coral, Eva Yerbabuena, Juana Amaya and Farruquito, Javier Barón, María Pagés... The foremost stars of flamenco dance will appear on the Seville stage throughout the season. Singing, guitar-playing and other instrumental flamenco variations are also going to have a place in the series. In fact the performance of singer Carmen Linares opens the series, and pianist Dorantes will close it out, in addition to forty cante recitals throughout the province of Seville.

Manuel Herrera Rodas, director of Seville's Bienal de Flamenco and coordinator of 'Jueves Flamencos' justifies the preponderance of dance saying that "it's flamenco's most representative show". The series includes works such as Antonio Canales' 'Bailaor'; Eva Yerbabuena's 'Paseíllo'; Juana Amaya's and Farruquito's 'Por Derecho' which hits the US in Flamenco Festival USA 2003. Seville dancers Javier Barón and María Pagés will also perform; Catalonian Carmen Cortés; and the young dancer Mercedes Ruiz who won the Bienal contest in 2002.

At the same time, Herrera Rodas is taking a stand in defense of the other manifestations: "It's a series which opens with Carmen Linares because of her seriousness and personality and because she represents authentic flamenco; and it's a series with closes with Dorantes because we're convinced that flamenco music knows no frontiers, and David Peña doesn't either". Along these lines, the singer from Huelva, Arcángel with the guitar of Juan Carlos Romero; Cádiz singer Chano Lobato and guitarist Juan Habichuela who are to accompany Matilde Coral in a recital titled "Historias del arte"; Tomatito in concert; Seville singers Lole Montoya and Esperanza Fernández; the Gerardo Núñez Trío; and Calixto Sánchez with Manolo Franco. In addition to this a parallel cycle is scheduled throughout the province of Seville, 'Conocer el Flamenco', with forty cante flamenco recitals.
