While her producer is ‘pressuring’
her to record a new album, Estrella
Morente stops to recapitulate. The Granada-born
cantaora releases ‘Antología’, a book-album
in which she compiles her entire record and video work.
It includes the three discs which the artist has created
so far: ‘Mi cante y un poema’, ‘Calle
del Aire’ and ‘Mujeres’. Moreover, it
has a DVD with the already known ‘Casacueva y escenario’
plus the previously unpublished concert presenting her début
album in 2001 at the Teatro Lara in Madrid. All of it is
complemented with a deluxe booklet over forty pages long
which, illustrated with full-color photos, offers a biographical
text and compiles the lyrics and credits of all her songs.

Estrella Morente releases ‘Antología’,
a special edition in a book-album format which contains
her entire work since the appearance of her first disc in
2001, with which she revolutionized the flamenco world and
the Spanish music scene. With 3 CDs+DVD, ‘Antología’
includes the three albums by the Granada-born cantaora (‘Mi
cante y un poema’, ‘Calle del Aire’ and
‘Mujeres’) plus the DVD ‘Casacueva y escenario’,
with the addition of the previously unpublished concert
presenting her first album held in the year 2001 at the
Teatro Lara in Madrid. All of it in a deluxe anthology edition
in book format with all of her songs’ lyrics, credits
and plenty of photographs.
Estrella Morente was born in 1980 in Las
Gabias (Granada), the daughter of maestro Enrique Morente
and bailaora Aurora Carbonell. Immersed in this ambience,
she sang at the age of 7 accompanied by the guitar of maestro
Sabicas and at 16, she made her début in the opening
gala of the World Downhill Ski Championship in Sierra Nevada
(Granada). After performing on different stages and establishing
herself in the show ‘Huellas de la Argentinita’
in 1997, in 2001 she made her début in the record
world with the album ‘Mi cante y un poema’,
produced by Enrique Morente and which included songs such
as ‘A Pastora’, ‘Coquinas’, ‘La
noche’, ‘Alcazaba’, ‘Peregrinitos’…
Recorded in Granada, Cádiz and Madrid, it was launched
all over the world by Peter Gabriel’s label Real World
and caused a commotion within the flamenco world, earning
a Silver Record.

In late 2001, she released ‘Calle
del Aire’, a fresh, eclectic, heterodox album with
songs such as ‘Caracol’, ‘Los cuatro muleros’,
‘Salve gitana del Sacromonte’ and some Christmas
carols like ‘Noche de paz’. She earned a Gold
Record with her second album and it meant the international
recognition of the cantaora, who broke flamenco’s
barriers and dazzled all sorts of audiences. In 2006, she
collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar in the film ‘Volver’,
singing the famous tango by Carlos Gardel. Appearing that
same year after five years without a record was ‘Mujeres’,
a collection of songs inspired by female characters dear
to Estrella and under the protective direction of Enrique
Morente. They’re songs which marked the artist throughout
her entire life, with titles like ‘Taranta’,
‘Tangos de Graná’, ‘Zambra’,
‘La noche de mi amor’, ‘Vuelvo al sur’
and a version of Jacques Brel’s ‘Ne me quitte
pas’. With ‘Mujeres’, which was also a
Gold Record, Estrella performed all over the world, afterwards
putting together the show ‘Pastora 1922’, which
amazed audiences in its run in London.
Previously unpublished concert
This tribute to La
Niña de los Peines was released on DVD in 2007
with the title ‘Casacueva y escenario’ and includes
the complete concert which was held at the Patio de los
Aljibes at La Alhambra in Granada, the same place where
Pastora Pavón took part in the First Cante Jondo
Contest. In the recital, Estrella Morente is accompanied
by Pepe Habichuela, José Miguel Carmona, Miguel Ochando,
Miguel Ángel Cortés, among other musicians,
evoking that legendary night in June 1922, promoted by Federico
García Lorca and Manuel de Falla. This DVD is extended
in this ‘Antología’ with the concert
presenting her first album which Estrella Morente offered
at the Teatro Lara in Madrid in 2001. Winner of the 2006
Music Award for Best Flamenco Album, Estrella Morente has
also won the Ondas Award for Best Flamenco Creation and
has been nominated for a Grammy, among other recognition
endorsing her career.
