Flamenco and tourism have forged an agreement whereby Seville's Bienal de
Flamenco hopes to be the standard-bearer. The festival has chosen the Feria International
de Turismo (Fitur), which is to be held in Madrid from January 30th to February
3rd, 2002 as a showcase to present the official poster for the twelfth edition
and announce the program. Sara Baras, Antonio Canales, Eva la Yerbabuena, María
Pagés, Vicente Amigo, Cañizares, José Mercé, Estrella
Morente and Javier Latorre are some of the artists who will participate in the
world's foremost flamenco festival between next September 3rd and October 6th.
The objective that Seville's Bienal de Flamenco hopes to achieve with its participation
at the Feria Internacional de Turismo (Fitur) which will bring together the most
important representatives of the tourism sector at the end of the month in Madrid,
is the reinforcement of flamenco's international image. At Fitur the festival's
organizers want to give new global impetus to the festival with the idea of reinforcing
the image of Seville as a tourist destination and flamenco center.

Antonio Canales in "Bailaor"
Manuel Herrera, director of Seville's Bienal de Flamenco, explains that one
of the aims the Bienal must accomplish is its commercial viability in the realm
of tourism at an international level. "We're going to Fitur because it is
Spain's largest tourism industry fair and we think that tourism is our greatest
resource". And he adds that "flamenco is what foreigners who come to
Andalusia are most attracted to, and just as Madrid is going to gather its most
important professionals from the tourism sector, we think that the Bienal should
also be present".
Despite the fact that they are still putting together the program for the twelfth
edition of the festival, Manuel Herrera, director of Seville's Bienal de Flamenco,
is going to present a preview at this eminently touristic event, as well as the
official poster for the 2002 edition which is the work of Seville painter and
sculptor Juan Suárez.
Premieres
The festival's organizers have already confirmed premieres to be presented
by the biggest stars of flamenco dance, guitar and singing between next September
3rd and October 6th of this year. Already confirmed are Sara Baras who is preparing
her work "Mariana Pineda", and Antonio Canales who will present a spectacular
production titled "Minotauro", as already announced by Flamenco-world.com.
The Bienal is also negotiating with other dancers such as Eva la Yerbabuena, María
Pagés, who will most likely present her musical version of "West Side
Story", and Javier Latorre who is readying a comic work based on the Cervantes
piece "Rinconete y Cortadillo"; guitarists Cañizares and Vicente
Amigo; and flamenco singers José Mercé and Estrella Morente among
others. The novelty is, this edition with be linked to the Second Feria Mundial
del Flamenco, a commercial and marketing event which came out in the black last
year.
