Flamenco Festival 2008 confirms
its lineup for the United States and London. And it does
so by clearly laying stakes on female flamenco dancing.
The program includes the shows ‘Santo y seña’
by Eva
Yerbabuena, ‘Sevilla’ by María
Pagés and ‘Una mirada del flamenco’
by Rafaela Carrasco, besides the gala ‘Mujeres’
which Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya and Rocío
Molina take part in. Other ways of understanding baile
are going to be displayed by the avant-garde Israel Galván
with ‘La edad de oro’, and on the tradition
side, Los Farruco. Cante and toque also have a place of
honor on the bill with Tomatito’s quintet in concert;
and the gala ‘Cuatro esquinas’ with Carmen
Linares, Miguel Poveda and Juan Carlos Romero. Marina
Heredia, Son de la Frontera and the show ‘¡Viva
Jerez!’ complete the bill, which is to be held February
7th to 23rd in the U.S. cities of New York, Washington
and Miami; and March 3rd to 16th in London.

The eighth edition of the U.S. festival
kicks off in Miami. At the Carnival Center on February
7th, the gala ‘Cuatro esquinas’ is scheduled
with cantaores Carmen
Linares and Miguel
Poveda, guitarist Juan Carlos Romero and bailaora
Pastora Galván. The next day, guitarist Tomatito
takes over with his quintet in concert. And the round
of shows in the city is closed by ‘Mujeres’,
a gala directed by bailaor and choreographer Mario
Maya performed in by bailaoras Merche
Esmeralda, Belén Maya, Rocío Molina
and singer Diana Navarro.

By then, the festival will already have
started in New York. Town Hall hosts ‘Cuatro esquinas’
on February 8th and Tomatito Quinteto on the 9th. At the
City Center, the gala of ‘Mujeres’ on February
15th; and the next two days, ‘Santo y seña’
by Eva Yerbabuena. New York University’s Skirball
Theater will play host to the group Son
de la Frontera on February 23th and 24th, presenting
their new album, ‘Cal’. Lisner Auditorium
in Washington D.C. is getting ready to welcome five days
of flamenco. From February 9th to 15th, the bill offers
the shows ‘Cuatro esquinas’, the concert by
Tomatito, ‘Mujeres’ and two performances of
‘Santo y seña’ by Eva
Yerbabuena, respectively.
The program in North America is completed
with what the organization has come to call ‘Flamenco
Festival on Tour 2008’. It includes a tour by the
Eva Yerbabuena Company with ‘Santo y seña’
on February 6th and 7th at Royce Hall in Los Angeles;
on the 9th and 10th at Emerson Majestic Theater in Boston;
and on the 21st at Maisoneuve in the Canadian city of
Montreal. In this show the Granada-born bailaora and choreographer
selects the pieces identifying her the most throughout
her career, among them, the famous soleá and the
mirabrás in a bata de cola.

London and the United States will be
different festivals, except for the galas ‘Cuatro
esquinas’ (March 10th) and ‘Mujeres’
(March 11th and 12th). The main bill in London, which
is to be held at Sadler’s Wells, opens with four
performances of ‘Sevilla’ by María
Pagés from March 3rd to 6th. From the 7th to
the 9th it’s time for ‘Los Farruco’,
a show by La
Farruca, Farru, La Faraona and Barullo. Then on the
13th, following the two aforementioned galas, the avant-garde
Israel
Galván performs ‘La edad de oro’.
On March 14th, flamenco takes a break to make way for
the copla, by Concha Buika. The following day, baile returns
with two performances of ‘Una mirada del flamenco’
by the Rafaela
Carrasco Company. And the icing on the cake comes
on March 16th with the collective show ‘¡Viva
Jerez!’, exalting flamenco from Jerez. Lilian Baylis
Theater complements the bill with shows by cantaora Marina
Heredia on March 8th and guitarist Juan
Carlos Romero’s trio on March 9th. Sara Baras,
Vicente Amigo, Eva Yerbabuena, José Mercé
and Enrique Morente are some of the artists who are now
part of the history of this festival twinned to Flamenco
Festival USA.
