The Flamenco Viene del Sur 2008 Series extends its circuit to Córdoba, Cádiz and Jaén

The program is to be held mainly in Seville, Málaga and Granada from January to May 2008

Flamenco-world.com, December 2008

Flamenco Viene del Sur broadens its area of influence. Besides scheduling the now traditional series of shows in Seville, Málaga and Granada, in the 2008 season it makes its first incursions in Córdoba, Cádiz and Jaén. The variety of the shows prevails on the bill, highlighted with performances by Manolo Sanlúcar, Marina Heredia, Esperanza Fernández, Manuela Carrasco, Antonio el Pipa, Rafaela Carrasco, Rocío Molina, La Moneta and El Lebrijano, among many others. And the thing is that, as the programs states, “this year stakes are laid on shows based on baile, but as always, there’s also cante and toque. The program gathers young talents and recognized artists”.

On its original stage, Seville’s Teatro Central, the Flamenco Viene del Sur 2008 Series is flanked by the performances of two great maestros: Manolo Sanlúcar inaugurates it on January 29th with the concert ‘El alma compartida’ and El Lebrijano closes on May 20th with an anthological recital. The core of the program is baile, with shows such as ‘Del amor y otras cosas’ by Rafaela Carrasco, ‘Puertas adentro’ by Antonio el Pipa, ‘Por el decir de la gente’ by Rocío Molina, ‘Flamenco XXI: Ópera, café y puro’ by the Estévez-Paños Company and Mercedes Ruiz sharing ‘Noche de Jerez’ with Jerez-born cantaor Luis el Zambo. And the thing is that cante also has a strong presence on the bill, with Esperanza Fernández, Marina Heredia and Calixto Sánchez presenting their respective albums. The touch of guitar will be provided by Tomatito in concert with his group.

‘Mujeres’, a show directed by Mario Maya and starring Merche Esmeralda, Belén Maya and Rocío Molina, will kick off Flamenco Viene del Sur 2008 at the Teatro Cánovas in Málaga on February 6th. Just like its Sevillian counterpart, the series is to be closed with a recital by El Lebrijano and baile is the center of attention, although the offer of artists is substantially different. Those to perform in the Mediterranean city include Manuela Carrasco with ‘Romalí’, Rocío Molina with ‘Almario’, La Moneta with ‘De entre la luna y los hombres’ and Ballet Flamenco David Morales with ‘Indiano’, among other artists. The instrumental section will be covered by Paco Cepero with ‘Abolengo’ and Japanese pianist Mie Matsumura with ‘Serenata andaluza’, a concert which Alejandro Granados and Leonor Leal dance in.

GRANADA. TEATRO ALHAMBRA

The program of Flamenco Viene del Sur 2008 is eminently bailaor. It kicks off with the gala ‘Mujeres’ on January 28th and concludes on May 19th with ‘El gitanito esquizofrénico’, a show which Javier Barón, José Valencia and Daniel Méndez take part in. Except for the toque recital by Manolo Sanlúcar and those of cante by Esperanza Fernández and Calixto Sánchez, all the rest is dance. The scheduled shows, which are to be held exclusively at the Teatro Alhambra, combine the long experience of Carrete and Pepa Montes with the freshness of Amador Rojas, La Choni and Rocío Molina.
