Flamenco bailaor Javier Barón, winner of the 2008 National Dance Prize. The Sevillian artist has received the award in the category of ‘Performance’, “for his contribution to flamenco from Spanish dance and for his dedication to the research of esthetics in flamenco, from orthodoxy and knowledge of this artform”, according to the members of the jury presided over by the managing director of the Performing Arts and Music Institute of Spain’s Ministry of Culture. Included among the most recent works by the bailaor from Alcalá de Guadaíra, who joined the Ballet Nacional de España (Spanish National Ballet) when it was directed by Antonio Ruiz Soler, is ‘Dime’, ‘Meridiana’ and ‘Dos voces para un baile’. With the latter show, in October at Seville’s Teatro Lope de Vega, he celebrated the twentieth anniversary of his winning the ‘Giraldillo del Baile’ award at the Bienal de Flamenco. Highlighting his upcoming performances will be his appearance at Festival de Jerez 2009. Barón is preceded on the list of flamenco artists winning the ‘National Prize’ by Manuela Carrasco, Israel Galván, María Pagés and Eva Yerbabuena, among others.
