Merche Esmeralda
stars in the sixteenth edition of the CajaMadrid Festival 2008.
The Sevillian bailaora, winner of the Calle de Alcalá
Award, attends the festival in Madrid as a part of ‘Mujeres’.
In the work, which she defines as “a show of the 20th
century and the 21st century”, she dances together with
Belén
Maya and Rocío
Molina. “Since I’m a real enthusiast of everything
which is movement, light, beauty... I lean on people who give
me that”, she explained at a press conference. To which
she added her satisfaction with the prize: “I didn’t
expect to receive anything because my profession is already
an award in itself, not a job”. Also attending the festival’s
presentation ceremony were artists such as Arcángel,
who will present his new show ‘Zambra 5.1’, “a
work put together with all due affection and respect for the
figure of Manolo Caracol, who deserves a tribute from all flamenco
enthusiasts”, at the Teatro Albéniz. The Huelva-born
artist will be just one of the many cantaores appearing on the
bill, highlighted by Enrique
Morente, who opens with the show ‘La voz creadora’,
accompanied on guitar by Pepe Habichuela. El Torta, Capullo
de Jerez, Mayte Martín, El Lebrijano, El Cabrero and
Calixto Sánchez complete the cantaor lineup. The festival,
which is to be held at the Teatro Albéniz in Madrid from
January 29th to February 2nd, 2008, will be prefaced by an activities
program at La Casa Encendida the previous week. A recital by
José Antonio Rodríguez, book presentations and
lectures are a few of the proposed events
