Chocolate (Photo: Daniel Muñoz)

Antonio Núñez Montoya ‘Chocolate’ dies in Seville. The cantaor passed away in the early morning hours of July 20th, 2005 at the age of 75 as the result of the cancer he was diagnosed with a few months ago. In fact, he was scheduled to perform last Saturday at Lebrija's 40th Caracolá, but was postponed due to his delicate state of health. The funeral chapel has been set up at his home in the neighborhood of La Macarena. Precisely, very close to Alameda de Hércules and Puerta de la Carne, spots where this Jerez-born artist and Sevillian by adoption began to forge his career. Chocolate, who received the Andalusia Medal in 2003 “for his contribution to the most classic flamenco and his great cantaor purity”, was a pupil of Manuel Vallejo, Tomás Pavón, Manolo Caracol... And has always preserved and enhanced the legacy passed on to him by such renowned maestros. The cantaor, who appeared in the films ‘Los Tarantos’ and ‘Flamenco’, perfectly mastered styles such as the seguiriya, soleá, personal fandangos and Manuel Torre's taranto. He takes with him a part of jondo art which is now history.
