Flamenco Festival USA 2009 kicks off with music by Dorantes and
baile by the Antonio Gades Company

Flamenco Festival USA
2009 kicks off with music by Dorantes and baile by the Antonio Gades
Company. The festival’s ninth edition begins simultaneously
at different locations around the United States on February 12th,
2009. At Lisner Auditorium in Washington D.C., Lebrija-born pianist
Dorantes and Huelva-born cantaor Arcángel will offer ‘Noche
de Sevilla’ with bailaora Rosario Toledo as guest artist.
At the same time, the concert is a promotional event for the Bienal
de Flamenco, which will also be showcased the following night at
the University of New York’s Skirball Theatre. Parallel to
that, the Antonio Gades Company revives the mythical show ‘Carmen’
at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. From that date forward, baile
cante and toque will tour New
York, Washington D.C. and Miami, with five different shows which
are, besides the aforementioned ones, Estrella Morente in concert,
‘La puerta abierta’ by Isabel Bayón and Los Farruco.
The latter two are part of the ‘On Tour’ program, which
takes four sole performances to Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Then from March 14th to 29th, the festival’s epicenter shifts
to Sadler’s Wells in London,
where shows are to be performed such as ‘Oro viejo’
by Rocío Molina, ‘Sevilla-Madrid-Sevilla’ by
the Ballet Nacional de España, ‘Santo y seña’
by Eva Yerbabuena, ‘Carmen’ by the Antonio Gades Company,
and repeating is ‘Mujeres’ by Merche Esmeralda, Belén
Maya and Rocío Molina. With this lineup, the director of
this multiple festival, Miguel Marín, assures that “flamenco
is assured to be in the best theaters in the world”. Up to
the past edition, the organization had already managed to register
half a million spectators.
