Antonio Gades dies at the age of 67. The dancer, choreographer and ‘bailaor’ born in Elda (Alicante) in 1936, passed away in Madrid on Tuesday 20th July, 2004 as a result of a cancer he suffered for several years. The genial artist, author of great flamenco shows such as ‘Bodas de sangre’ or ‘Fuenteovejuna’, was recently awarded in Cuba with the Orden de José Martí, after sailing the Atlantic ocean in his own ship. Antonio Gades was the first director of Ballet Nacional de España and was distinguished in 1983 with the Premio Nacional de las Bellas Artes. Between 1980 and 1986 participated with the film director Carlos Saura in the musical films ‘Bodas de sangre’, ‘Carmen’ and ‘El amor brujo’, a trilogy that is the best audiovisual testimony of his work. He also performed in other films, such as ‘Los Tarantos’ with the dancer Carmen Amaya and ‘Salomón y la reina de Saba’ with the actress Gina Lollobrigida. Gades became an artist of international recognition that revolutionized theatrical flamenco.
