Rocío
Molina, Miguel
Poveda and Gerardo Núñez fill the Málaga
weekend with wonders. Two straight performances
by bailaora Rocío Molina and cantaor Miguel Poveda were
in charge of opening the ‘Siete Maravillas’ (‘Seven
Wonders’) series at Festival de Málaga last Friday.
Although both were originally scheduled in Torcal de Antequera,
in the end, security matters forced the festival organization
to move them to La Colegiata de Santa María in the same
city. The change of location did not keep Rocío
Molina –who had prepared her show at a monastery in
Archidona - from displaying her work Por el decir de la gente,
an up-close-and-personal show, where the silence of the enclave
was an essential part of a natural, minimalist experiment which
had no room for instrumental music. Nor was it missed, because
the sound of the Málaga-born bailaora’s shoes and
the voices of David Lagos, Rafael Jiménez ‘Falo’,
Jesús Méndez and Rosario Guerrero La Tremendita
filled La Colegiata with little jewels to be remembered.
Next, cantaor Miguel
Poveda (originally from Badalona) presented his show Por los
caminos que van, in which he put his great faculties and his
renowned voice at the service of verses and coplas by Málaga-born
poet José Antonio Muñoz Rojas, winner of the National
Poetry Prize. Composer and guitarist Juan Carlos Romero, who
composed the music, was in charge of accompanying Poveda and
actor Fernando García Rimada, who acted out verses by
the poet, besides performing solo pieces.
Then guitarist Gerardo
Núñez, one of the most prolific flamenco creators,
presented his show Agua, espacio, tiempo y piedra on Sunday
within the same series, ‘Siete Maravillas’. The
internationally renowned and acclaimed Jerez-born artist filled
the bewitching cave of La Cueva de Nerja with the magical toque
of his hands. The guitarist premiered a piece composed especially
for the occasion and dedicated to the venue where he played
and performed a repertoire with his usual songs, full of great
wealth and complexity and with the virtuosity he features.
