Jorge
Pardo dazzles at Seville’s Flamenco Thursdays
2008 with his ‘Vientos flamencos’. The
Madrilenian musician, for many years a member of the now mythical
Paco de Lucía Sextet, shook up the series with the only
instrumental show on the bill. After ten Thursdays starring
cante, toque and baile, Jorge Pardo demonstrated that you can
be as jondo, or more so, with a flute and a sax. He brought
as accomplices a small but select squad of artists from Jerez.
Jerez-born guitarist Juan
Diego provided not just the soniquete but also the refinement.
El Chispa marked the way on percussion. And Tomasito
displayed his unclassifiable talent as a cantaor-singer-rapper,
bailaor and, as the host says, showman, ending up having the
audience eating out of his hand at the jam-packed Fundación
Cajasol’s Sala Joaquín Turina. A real release of
essences, a real renunciation of floweriness... as is flamenco’s
place.
