Flamenco guitarist
José
Manuel León tackles playing without accompaniment
in a tour of Brazil. The young Algeciras-born musician
has bedazzled Brazilian audiences, critics and musicians alike
in a tour promoted by the Instituto Cervantes. From September
9th to 17th, 2007, he starred solo in half a dozen concerts
in cities such as Portoalegre, Brasilia, Salvador de Bahía,
São Paulo and Río de Janeiro, including venues
as emblematic as the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP).
As León explains, “I’ve offered concerts
completely solo, without accompaniment, over an hour and a half
long”. The repertoire came fundamentally off of his début
album, ‘Sirimusa’,
although for the occasion he added “two new songs I’m
recording for my next album and a little tribute to Paco
de Lucía, my version of the slow alegrías
‘Recuerdo a Patiño’, a song which is twenty-five
years old but which I love”. Now, as he admits, “I’m
looking forward to repeating the experience; I felt great alone
with my instrument”.
