2005 AICHI FLAMENCO
FESTIVAL. Belén Maya with Mayte
Martín and the New Spanish Ballet stand by classicism
and the avant-garde at the Japanese expo. Tokyo International
Forum offered the Japanese audience another two vibrant days
of flamenco, following the smashing success of Sara Baras and
Eva Yerbabuena. On the one hand, the New Spanish Ballet, captained
by Carlos Rodríguez and Ángel Rojas, presented
‘Direct Flamenco’, an avant-garde show which has
traveled the international stage circuit since 1998. And on
the other hand, on Friday, May 13th, bailaora Belén Maya
and cantaora Mayte Martín offered neoclassicism in ‘Chamber
Flamenco’, a show which with elegance and bareness, opts
for tradition and the recovery of figures such as La Niña
de los Peines and Carmen Amaya and of styles like the soleá,
alegrías and vidalita. The former on baile and the latter
on cante carry out their respective performances to perfection,
in a tête-à-tête which is touching in substance
and captivating in form. As ‘El País’ correspondent
Miguel Mora relates, “the Tokyo International Forum figuratively
carried out the two stars on its shoulders”.
