Homage to cantaor
Miguel Poveda at the 2008 Festival Flamenco de La Unión.
Fifteen years after he received the ‘Lámpara Minera’
award that shot him to fame, Miguel
Poveda returned to Festival del Cante de las Minas with
the red carpet treatment. On 10th August the Catalan cantaor
received the ‘Castillete de Oro’, an honorary award
recently bestowed on artists such as Antonio Gades, Carlos Saura,
Enrique Morente and Chano Lobato. A few hours later, he stepped
up on stage at the so-called Cathedral of cante to the delight
of the thrilled audience. The vocalist, who received a National
Music Award in 2007, shared the bill with Seville-born bailaora
Rafaela Carrasco, who offered her production ‘Con Cierto
gusto’. The forty-eighth edition of the Murcia festival
features the Ballet Nacional de España, cantaores such
as El Lebrijano, bailaores like Antonio Canales and guitarists
such as Cañizares. Following the program of performances,
the contest runs from 13th to 15th August, where artists compete
for the cante, baile and guitar awards.
