The Montoya Family
opens the Flamenco at the Sabatini Gardens 2007 Series
with a look at Triana. It isn’t the family of times past,
that which linked generations and brimmed over with live, natural
flamenco. It has now been taken over by three representatives
of the following crop in the family; Andina, Angelita and Carmelilla.
And they do so with a more static and moderate concept, designed
by guitarist José Acedo and accompanied by percussions,
guitars and bass. The three of them are seated and singing in
unison throughout most of the show, which on the first night
of the series being held with Madrid’s Palacio Real (Royal
Palace) as the backdrop, had a cool breeze as its guest and
a little over half the tickets sold. After performing songs
por tangos, alegrías, soleá, rumbas, seguiriyas
and bulerías (dedicated to Lole and La Negra), they managed
to knock things up a necessary notch for the night when Carmelilla
finally came out to dance. And she floated around the stage
with the delicacy of air and with the deep roots of the land,
of that Triana which will continue to be evoked tomorrow on
the same stage with performances by Esperanza Fernández,
Manuel Molina... and La Negra.
