Sara Baras, 'Juana la Loca'

Sara Baras and Miguel Poveda, flamenco baile and cante at the 50th Cueva de Nerja Festival. A traditional-style recital by the Barcelona-born cantaor, taking a break from the summer festival of his hit album ‘Coplas del querer’, will open the bill on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 commemorating half a century of this program of ballet, classical music and flamenco. Following performances by tenor Josep Carreras and soloists of the Paris Opera Ballet, the jondo will return to the cave in Nerja (Málaga) on Sunday, July 25th with the Sara Baras Company. The Cádiz-born bailaora revives her theater show ‘Juana la Loca’, premiered at Seville’s 2000 Bienal de Flamenco. The show will also be performed at the Sabatini Gardens in Madrid from August 17th to 19th, in the setting of Veranos de la Villa 2009. Since the Cueva de Nerja Festival got started back in 1960, numerous flamenco dancing companies have performed under the stalactites of the beautiful cavern in the province of Málaga, among them, those of Antonio, Pilar López, Luisillo, Rafael de Córdova, Antonio Gades, and recently, Manuela Carrasco. In previous editions, the rocks have also amplified the voice of cantaores such as José Menese and José Mercé, and music by guitarists Paco de Lucía and Manolo Sanlúcar.
