Mayte Martín and El Cabrero, contrasting cante to open the 2010 Nîmes Flamenco Festival

Mayte Martín and El Cabrero, contrasting cante to open the 2010 Nîmes Flamenco Festival. Two diametrically different cantaores have just inaugurated the twentieth edition of the French festival. On Tuesday, January 12th, the Catalan cantaora kicked things off by sticking to the cantaor repertoire which, with her characteristic sweetness and impeccability, she so faithfully reflected on albums like ‘Querencia’. The following night El Cabrero made use of more forceful weapons to perform before the Nîmes audience. The Sevillian cantaor offered his vindicative flamenco at the Théâtre de Nîmes, in a recital with lyrics of his own which, as the local newspaper ‘Midi-Libre’ explained, speak of “questions which man asks himself, about his hopes”.
