Flamenco guitarist
Paco
Cepero presents the album ‘Abolengo’
in Madrid. The Jerez-born musician celebrates his fifty-year
professional career with this album. It was thus explained by
poet Enrique Montiel in a ceremony held at SGAE headquarters
in Madrid on December 5th, 2007, which the tocaor sealed by
performing three songs off the album. According to Montiel,
it includes the three facets in which his guitar unfolds: “Compás
de Jerez, song and solo toque”. He added that precisely
this latter Cepero, the soloist, “is recent; he isn’t
even eight years old. And he arises when, following thirty-seven
years in Madrid, he returns to Jerez. There, he reaches inside
to see what he can find, and gets into pure flamenco creation”.
‘De
pura cepa’ and ‘Corazón
y bordón’ are the other two albums belonging
to this stage. And he concluded that “in ‘Abolengo’
we come across a full-fledged Paco Cepero”. This statement
was attested to by the guitarist himself, despite the fact that
“for the first time in fifty years, a peg’s been
broken on my guitar”. No problem. Cepero embraced the
guitar lent to him by Miguel Salado, in charge of second guitar,
and with the smooth adornment of a box drum, he performed songs
such as ‘Feria’ and ‘Plazuela’. An unmistakable
personal trademark in the melodies, a relentless Jerez thumb,
frolicking rhythm and overwhelming maturity all appeared in
a question of minutes. It was just a little taste. On February
7th at Seville’s Flamenco Thursdays 2008, there will be
the chance to savor ‘Abolengo’ in its entirety.
