Málaga
en Flamenco 2007. Guitar with soul. Free,
spontaneous, cheerful and serene. That’s what Manolo
Sanlúcar’s guitar is like and that’s
what it was like once again in the show El alma compartida,
which he offered at the Teatro Cánovas in Málaga,
accompanied by Carmen Grilo on cante, David Carmona on guitar
and Rafael Hermoso ‘Poti’ on percussion. Endowed
with exceptional musicality and the restlessness becoming of
a limitless creator, the most ambitious of the guitarist’s
contributions to this art form is his lasting search to integrate
flamenco into symphonic music. That restlessness has led him
to compose several works of enormous interest which have placed
him among the great composers of our time and which were enjoyed
by a jam-packed auditorium. On stage, the artist from Sanlúcar
de Barrameda displayed his sensitivity, his penetrating, enriching
toque imbued with feeling and that air of true old style, with
his more interesting creations, such as ‘Tauromagia’,
‘Maestranza’, ‘Oración’, ‘Tercio
de Varas’ and ‘Locura de brisa y trino’. All
of them endowed with that Baroque style he features and which
leads him to perform them with touches and strumming of seguiriyas,
tarantos, cantiñas and soleás, according to each
one’s state of mind. To finish the concert, ‘Piedad’
and ‘Danza de los pavos’; sensual pieces, serene
and unhurried, the summary of a superb lesson on guitar, mastery
and art.
