Flamenco cantaor
Turronero
dies in Utrera. Scarcely a few days after Fernanda
de Utrera’s adieu, the Sevillian town is in mourning once
again as it bids farewell to another of its most emblematic
cantaores. Manuel Mancheno Peña ‘El Turronero’
died of a brain stroke on September 1st, 2006 at the age of
59, following a long illness which kept him away from stages
for years. The cantaor, born in the Cádiz-area town of
Vejer in 1947, made an outstanding place for himself in the
flamenco world as a result of his work singing for baile at
tablaos in Madrid in the ’60s and ’70s. After joining
the Antonio Gades Company, he set out on his solo career with
albums composed by his usual guitarist, Paco Cepero.
