Everyone
for Juanito Valderrama. Montse Cortés, Guadiana, El Potito, Arcángel, Miguel
Poveda, José el Francés, El Pele, Diego el Cigala and Carmen
Linares, seconded by guitarists Eduardo Cortés, Niño Josele, Paquete, Daniel
Méndez, Chicuelo, Manuel Silveria and José Manuel León, gave Juanito
Valderrama a warm tribute on the night of February 23rd, 2004 at Madrid's
Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones (convention center), an act organized by the
Andalusian Junta. Each artist, just as it so happens on the album 'Tributo
a don Juan Valderrama', does his or her own version of a song by Valderrama
through bulerías, malagueñas, tientos, fandangos... and through 'El Emigrante',
the famous song that he created together with Niño Ricardo. Words of admiration
and recognition and affectionate gestures towards the maestro were non-stop all
evening long. Valderrama, deeply touched, responded by singing through tarantas
with Juan Habichuela on toque and with his Córdoba hat. With such a group of artists,
it can be imagined what the grand finale was like: memorable. Even maestra Pilar
López left her seat and dedicated a heart-felt 'pataíta' through bulerías
to the veteran Jaén-born cantaor.
