Flamenco, star of the American edition
of Vogue
(Excerpt from the special feature 'Made in Spain' by Vogue,
with Penélope Cruz and Diego el Cigala, among others)
Flamenco, star
of the American edition of Vogue. Hand-in-hand with
Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, the jondo art appears
in one of the most popular international fashion magazines.
The report by Gaby Wood, entitled ‘Made in Spain’,
portrays the artist in Madrid surrounded by such characteristic
motifs as bullfighting, Goya-style painting, the rural world,
and of course, flamenco. In one of the photographs taken by
Annie Leibovitz, there is a flamenco party in which cantaor
Diego
el Cigala appears surrounded by ‘his band’ and
the actress’s sister, Mónica Cruz, who was a member
of the Joaquín Cortés Company. And it isn’t
the first time the actress approaches flamenco, since in Almodóvar’s
‘Volver’ she sings - with Estrella Morente’s
voice - a version por bulerías of the famous bolero.
The special feature, published in the December 2007 issue, comes
out two months before the start in New York of the eighth edition
of Flamenco Festival USA, which will take artists of the likes
of Carmen Linares, Tomatito and Eva Yerbabuena to stages such
as the City Center in New York, Lisner Auditorium in Washington
and the Carnival Center in Miami.
