The child has yet to be baptized. Gerardo
Núñez is putting the finishing touches to what is to be his
next disc. The album is due to be released on the German ACT label in March 2004.
The guitarist from Jerez is looking to provide "a showcase of the music I'm
making now, not what I already did, nor what I can do." And so he lets the
language of flamenco mingle freely with that of jazz or that of Cuban music. The
musician, who recently launched his official website at Flamenco-world.com, works
on the album with the two other components of the trio: contrabassist Pablo Martín
and percussionist Cepillo, as well as Perico Sambeat on saxophone, Paolo Fresu
on trumpet, and Mariano Díaz on keyboards, to name but a few.

After his recent work with Carmen
Linares in 'Un
ramito de locura', Gerardo Núñez has made up his mind that "this
is going to be a solo guitar album... no vocals". The tracks on the album
are all new compositions, except for two tunes already released on the disc 'Jazzpaña
II'. Gerardo Núñez explains that he wrote three bulerías,
"that are all totally different", as well as a soleá... In fact,
as the artist himself points out, "there's a bit of everything." The
new version of the farruca he composed for Israel Galván's show 'Galvánicas',
premièred at the 2002 Bienal de Sevilla, is worth a mention. This track
"has been given a different approach here, much more like a jazz ballad."
On this album the artist from Jerez aims to
provide a showcase of the music he's been taking to every corner of the globe
of late. Gerardo Núñez has found a winning musical formula in the
flagship trio - guitar, contrabass and percussion - which has been well-received
around the world, sometimes enriched with contributions by bailaora Carmen
Cortés, cantaor Rafael de Utrera and saxophonist Perico Sambeat. With
these and other musicians, he has also been performing 'Cruce
de caminos', a project which evolved from a live performance at Seville's
Teatro Central in September 2000. This project was another step along the path
the musician cut for himself in the 90s. On his disc 'Calima',
he's joined by Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci and Arto Tuncboyaciyan. In
addition he formed two quartets, one with Eberhard Weber, Richard Galliano and
Erico Raba; the other, International Guitar Night, with Alex de Grassi, Paolo
Bellinati and Briam Gare, with whom he toured the U.S.

The artist has been juggling the recording
of this new disc with a demanding schedule of international performances. Just
back from La Habana, where as well as performing he gave a seminar, the guitarist
made a stopover in December 2003 in Spain. He will pass through several cities
including Marbella, where he headlines at the III Festival Mundial de Flamenco.
Looking to 2004, he will perform in Spain again in January alongside Carmen Cortés
with 'Cruce de Caminos' and at Teatro Central de Sevilla's 'Seminario de Jazz
y Flamenco', where he will also present his brainchild The
New School of Flamenco Guitar. From the end of January, the guitarist will
take to the international stage once again, with concerts in Holland, Germany,
Austria and France. And in March, after performing with Dave Holland in Seville,
he'll play in Denmark and Granada. American fans will have to wait until April,
and concerts are also under negotiation for the same month in Israel.
