The advisory council of Seville’s 2006 Bienal de Flamenco has already given its verdict. Miguel Poveda, Giraldillo for Cante. Eva Yerbabuena, Giraldillo for Baile. Paco Jarana, Giraldillo for Toque. Joining the three prizes for the main flamenco categories awarded by the Sevillian festival is the Giraldillo for Best Show, going to ‘La puerta abierta’ by Isabel Bayón.

With its sights set on the contribution of “new creative roads”, the jury awards the Giraldillo for Innovation, shared by Pastora Galván for ‘La Francesa’ and Varuma Teatro for the children’s show ‘Malgama’. At the same time, it recognizes special mentions with the Giraldillo for Mastery going to bailaor Javier Barón, guest artist of ‘Los Juncales’; and the Giraldillo for Best New Artist going to bailaora Luisa Palicio for her participation in the show by Milagros Mengíbar.

The list of prizes also includes a Giraldillo for Best Stage Direction going to Mario Maya and his work ‘Andalucía, el flamenco y la humanidad’. There’s also a Giraldillo for Best Choreography shared by two now deceased artists: José Granero, who was paid tribute to; and Antonio Gades, whose ‘Bodas de sangre’ was revived at this festival, among other shows.

The Giraldillo for Best Music goes to Pedro Sierra for his ‘soundtrack’ for ‘La Francesa’ by Pastora Galván. In the Magic Moment Giraldillo, Bienal 2006 repeats the awards for Miguel Poveda, Eva Yerbabuena and Paco Jarana, for the sevillanas in the show ‘Tierra de calma’, in which Dorantes also appeared. The Giraldillo for Musical Performance goes to Huelva-born percussionist Antonio Coronel and clapper Bobote.
