The Grammy Latino Awards take stock of
flamenco releases during the last year. The Latin Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences has selected five albums of which only one will obtain the prized trophy
in the form of a golden gramophone, already adorning Vicente Amigo's shelves,
and posthumously awarded to Camarón. The latest vocal offerings from cantaora
Remedios Amaya from Seville, cantaor Arcángel from Huelva, Madrileño
Diego el Cigala, the legendary Chocolate, and songstress Martirio from Huelva
are all candidates for the prize, to be awarded on 18th September 2002 during
the ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theater.
The list of nominees has now been finalized.
The 2002 Grammy Latino for the best flamenco album has to be chosen from among
five hopefuls: 'Sonsonete' by Remedios Amaya (Hispavox), 'Arcángel' by
Arcángel (Yerbabuena Virgin), 'Corren tiempos de alegría' by Diego
el Cigala (Tablao), 'Mucho corazón' by Martirio (on the independent label
52 PM / Karonte) and 'Mis 70 años con el cante' by Antonio Núñez
Chocolate (Muxxic Records).

The winner of the golden gramophone will be
announced on 18th September 2002 during the gala to be held at Hollywood's Kodak
Theater, together with the award-winners from all the other categories. When last
year's ceremony had to be postponed as it coincided with the horrific events of
September 11th, the hot favorite was Spanish pop singer Alejandro Sanz. This year,
salsa singer Celia Cruz and Colombian singer Carlos Vives will head the list of
nominees.
The two previous editions of the Grammy Latino
Awards saw 'Ciudad de las Ideas' by Vicente Amigo and 'París 1987', a previously
unreleased live recording of Camarón, as respective winners in the flamenco
category. Last year, when the guitarist from Córdoba was also nominated
for the best album category, he was up against vocal offerings from cantaor José
Mercé from Jerez with 'Aire', cantaora Mayte Martín from Catalunya
with 'Querencia', Montse Cortés, also from Catalunya, with her 'Alabanza',
cantaora Estrella Morente from Granada, with her début album 'Mi cante
y un poema' and Jerez combo Navajita Plateá, with their 'Hablando en plata'.
