Poems, experiments, singing guitars,
songs, coplas… All of the ingredients which have refreshed
the flamenco genre over the past year come together on the
list of nominees for the 2009 Latin Grammy in the category
of ‘Best Flamenco Album’. Competing for the
gold gramophone award are two veteran cantaores, Carmen
Linares and Enrique Morente, a brilliant guitarist as is
Vicente Amigo and two youths with hybrid proposals; Niña
Pastori and Miguel Poveda.

Carmen
Linares opts for the award with her album ‘Raíces
y alas’, a disc on which she sings to poet Juan Ramón
Jiménez, with production and scores by guitarist
Juan Carlos Romero. Enrique Morente also set his sights
on one of the most universal Spanish artists to compose
‘Pablo de Málaga’: Picasso is the leitmotif
of an album with high doses of experimentation. Córdoba-born
guitarist Vicente Amigo once again bids for the prize with
his album ‘Paseo de Gracia’, where he set himself
the challenge of “singing with the guitar” together
with first-rate voices.
The representation of youths is split up
between Niña
Pastori with ‘Esperando verte’, a disc on
which she combines traditional cantes with flamenco-style
songs; and Miguel Poveda with ‘Coplas del querer’,
a double album dedicated to Spanish copla which includes
a song from the soundtrack of ‘Los abrazos rotos’
(‘Broken Embraces’) by Pedro Almodóvar.
Outside of the specific category for flamenco,
cantaora India
Martínez is nominated with her album ‘Despertar’
for the Latin Grammy for ‘Best New Artist’ and
‘Best Engineered Album’; Ojos de Brujo for ‘Best
Recording Package’ for their disc ‘Aocaná’;
and Chaboli has a nomination for ‘Best Producer’
for ‘Esperando verte’ by Niña Pastori.
The winners will be revealed on November 5th, 2009 during
a gala at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
