Dutch Flamenco Biennial 2008. Show schedule

From October 26th to November 2nd, 2008, the Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht are going to be united by flamenco. And specifically, by a diverse handful of shows which mix roots and contemporaneity. The second edition of the Dutch Flamenco Biennial 2008 has a lineup of shows such as ‘El cielo de tu boca’ by Andrés Marín, ‘El tiempo del diablo’ by Diego Carrasco, ‘La puerta abierta’ by Isabel Bayón and ‘Lo que trae el aire’ by Fuensanta la Moneta. Moreover, it includes cante and guitar recitals by artists like El Pele and Chicuelo, musical encounters between flamenco and other types of world music, workshops and a photo exhibit by Daniel Muñoz.

The Dutch Flamenco Biennial 2008 will kick off on October 26th at the Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ in Amsterdam. And it will do so with ‘El cielo de tu boca’ by Andrés Marín. The show, recently premiered at Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008, has the cante of José Valencia and Segundo Falcón, plus the special collaboration of experimental musician Llorenç Barber. The same day, the Sevillian bailaor will collaborate in the video-performance ‘Bailaré sobre tu tumba’ by Pilar Albarracín. On October 27th and 28th, the festival moves to Rotterdam and Utrecht, where at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes (Cervantes Institute) and the RASA, respectively, flamencologist José María Velázquez-Gaztelu will offer the lecture ‘El flamenco, música en la vida’ (‘Flamenco, Music in Life’), illustrated by Segundo Falcón, Salvador Gutiérrez and José Valencia.

The fourth day of the festival, which is biennial, is split up between Rotterdam, with a master-class and a recital by Chicuelo at the World Music Dance Centre; and Amsterdam, where Diego Carrasco presents his new show ‘El tiempo del diablo’, with Moraíto and Pastora Galván as guest artists. Then on October 30th, El Pele offers the recital ‘Puro y jondo’ in Utrecht, while the Dutch flamenco jazz group Flamix performs at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. The performance by the Córdoba-born cantaor, who has just published his album ‘8 guitarras... y un piano’, is repeated the following day at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. That same day, Granada-born bailaora Fuensanta la Moneta puts on ‘Lo que trae el aire’ at the De Doelen in Rotterdam, at the same time as the performance by the Chicuelo Quartet at the RASA in Utrecht.

The agenda intensifies in the final stretch. Several encounters are scheduled for November 1st. One of them, between the Moroccan music of Cherifa Kersit Ensemble and the flamenco of guitarist Niño Josele at the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam. Another, between Colombian plain dweller music and the group Ultra High Flamenco. And moreover, Isabel Bayón presents ‘La puerta abierta’ with El Pele and Jesús Torres in Utrecht and Chicuelo, his album ‘Diapasión’ in Amsterdam. The festival will be closed by Miguel Poveda at the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam with his show ‘Sin Frontera’, including guest stars Luis el Zambo, Moraíto and Chicuelo. The festival is completed with cante, baile and guitar workshops, debates and an exhibit of photos by Daniel Muñoz, selected from the work he has done for Flamenco-world.com, displayed at the different locations of the festival.
