Flamenco bailaor Israel Galván and dancer Sol Picó ‘challenge’ one another at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao

Flamenco-world.com, November 2007

The International Contemporary Dance Festival of Bilbao, Dantzaldi'07, will host a “performing duel” between contemporary dancer Sol Picó and Sevillian flamenco bailaor Israel Galván, accompanied on cante - in Basque - by Jerez-born David Lagos. And it will be in a very special setting; the hall of the Guggenheim Museum where steel sculptures by American Richard Serra are on exhibit.

‘Encuentro’ is an assignment by the festival, which thus joins the tenth anniversary of the museum designed by Frank Gehry. The show, the second one the dancers collaborate on together after ‘Paella mixta’, is going to take advantage of the connections with Basque culture which have arisen in the latest works by Israel Galván.

In ‘La Francesa’ he choreographed with music and text by Mikel Laboa in ‘Haga Biga Higa’, with music by Mikel Laboa and text by Bernardo Atxaga in ‘Antzinako Bihotz’ and with music by Joseba Tapia in ‘Tapia y Leturia’ and with text by Bernardo Atxaga in ‘Gure Trikitilariak’. Moreover, in ‘El final de este estado de cosas’, the latest show by the Sevillian artist, an ‘aurresku’ is danced.

The performances are scheduled for December 4th and 5th, 2007, with two shows every day at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. At the same time, the Sevillian bailaor is still on tour with his shows ‘La edad de oro’, ‘Tabula rasa’ and ‘Arena’, which he will perform in the next few months in countries such as Norway and France.
