Israel is preparing its annual date with flamenco.
In this special edition, which commemorates the ADI Foundation's tenth anniversary,
the Gerardo Núñez Trío and Carmen
Cortés will be taking the flamenco arts to Tel Aviv, just as Rafael
Campallo and María Pagés did at past editions of the festival. The
band comprising guitarist Gerardo Núñez, contrabass player Pablo
Martín, percussionist Cepillo, cantaor Rafael
de Utrera and bailaora Carmen Cortés will perform 'El color de la armonía'
(The color of harmony), an elegant flamenco music and dance production. The first
performance will be on Wednesday March 31st at the Haifa Auditorium, followed
by shows at the Suzanne Delal Theater from April 1st to 3rd.
As for the annual spotlight on young Israeli
flamenco dancers, Carmen Cortés will give a choreography masterclass at
the Bat Dor Studio, serving as an acid test for hopefuls wishing to participate
in the next edition. The winners from last year's festival will give a fully-fledged
performance of the show 'Ganadoras' - directed by Sharon Sagui and with music
by Sason Levi and Yechiel Hason - on Saturday April 3rd at 1pm. With this special
production, the festival celebrates the tenth anniversary of the ADI Foundation,
the entity which runs the festival along with Spanish cultural organization Instituto
Cervantes. This special production will feature dancers who were prizewinners
in all previous editions of the festival, such as Keren Jacobi, Shelly Almog and
Hagar Koren, along with the winner of the first edition, Carmel Natan.
ADI Foundation
The Días de Flamenco Festival is the
brainchild of the ADI Foundation. This organization was set up in 1993 in memory
of Adi Agmon, a young and passionate fan of dance and flamenco whose dream of
traveling to Spain in order to study the flamenco arts was never fulfilled. But
before cancer got the better of her she asked that a summer scholarship be set
up for Israeli bailaores or bailaoras. Cristina
Hoyos, the Cristina Heeren Foundation, Manolo Marín and other
Spanish public institutions all worked to make this a dream come true. And with
the passing of time, the idea began to grow into something bigger, with not only
flamenco vocal and guitar scholarships, but also with a festival established,
bringing companies such as those of Adrián Galia, Domingo Ortega and María
Pagés to Tel Aviv in March of every year.
